Or even other intelligences who aren't people and whose frame of reference can't be compared to our own point by point. For instance, it would be weird trying to convey the idea of a benevolent father god to the members of a society more like a bee colony.

because of Reasons, i washed my hair with dish soap and rinsed it with ice cold hose water, and it’s the softest it’s been in ages. shampoo is fake??? what happened??

@jacktrash silicones are common in modern shampoos and can build up on the hair shaft; maybe using a harsher cleanser stripped em off?

I’ve never known how much to trust hair advice since a lot of it seems questionable, like people who sincerely believe hair grows from the tip and thus can be spurred into growing faster by removing damaged ends, which is not true in any way. I have also heard that cold water is best for rinsing hair at the end because it makes the cuticle close down on the shaft or something, but I have absolutely no idea why a dead strand of cells would have a heat preserving reaction. So.... I really don’t know.

I mean. That's not a reaction that actually requires any aliveness, it's a purely thermo physical reaction as far as I know. Pinecones do it too, even when detached from the tree for ages, bc it has to do with molecular expansion and contraction, not with any actual cellular metabolism.

The dead ends thing isn't about hair growing from the tip, actually. Even though hair is essentially "dead" cells, the body still has a way to sense and communicate with it, or else things like terminal length, the genetic predisposition for hair to stop growing once it's reached a certain length, wouldn't exist. It's the same mechanism that allowed the body to know when it needs to grow new skin cells despite the skin on the surface being "dead". Basically if the damaged hair at the ends is removed every so often, the body goes "oh okay it's time to create more of this".

It actually doesn't, and neither do the dead skin cells. You body just sheds those periodically from beneath, unless stress (like mechanical etc) encourage the formation of caluses. But if you have damage just in the dead layers, that damage stays there until thr cells flake off naturally.

Determined hair length actually is kinda tied to where the hair is, since you can infact do hair grafts from non-head places TO the head and then habe it get longer than say, chesthair would get. The hair follicle stopping productiom and 'cycling' determines how long the hair gets.

Hair really really doesn't sense anything. The hair folicle, which is the alive part can and does, but the idea that cut hair grows thicker/faster is an optical trick. By removing the thin ends the entire hair looks thicker, and since especially with cuts where a lot of length is lost, you just notice the growth more
Even at the same rate, going from one inch to two inches over a month will be more noticable than going from 15 to 16 inches in the same time, despite the identical growth rate

removing frayed ends also keeps them from fraying further, thus keeping you from losing length to bits breaking off. which makes it seem to grow faster because you don't have your normal growth speed counteracted by losing length from the tips.

I have had a hairdresser insist that the hair grew from the tip once, like a plant. I was like, seven, and I just didn’t have it in my heart to argue too hard because she was so nice and it didn’t really matter. And I frankly wouldn’t believe a seven year old who was contradicting information I thought I knew about my own field either without at least looking it up.

i did some googling and found quite a number of mentions of using dish soap to strip off shampoo residue, and also oils that shampoo won't budge. they generally also say that you should not use it every time, because it is 'too strong' or 'too harsh'. but i wasn't able to find any personal accounts or before-and-after pics of what happens if you just switch from pantene to palmolive. i am skeptical of theoretical claims presented as fact. do the science, people!

well, i've only got this sokka mohawk because seebs sadfaced when i said i was going to shave my head again, so i'm in a perfect position to use myself as a guinea pig. if it turns into an elder horror from the deeps, i can just shave it off like i was gonna in the first place. more likely, it'll look kind of dull or something, and since i don't care how i look, that's no big.

so i think for the next month or so, until it gets cold, i'm not going to shampoo in the shower. instead, i'll wash my hair when i get out of the pool, with the garden hose, using the no-color-no-scent palmolive dish soap i keep in the greenhouse for washing fleeces.

The probable concern is that it could strip away natural oils on the scalp and hair shaft via molecular hydrophobic action yadda yadda

Idk I had no problems washing my hair with bicarb of soda for months on end despite dire warnings so go science up some results

I designed a chopping optimized sword that I'd like to make someday. Double edged, with one edge thin and razor sharp, the other more axe-like.
