My experience with it is that it's fine! I drink rarely but I usually have a few when I do, and it doesn't seem to fuck up how it works for me. That said, I'm on it for anxiety and I've never experienced antidepressant discontinuation syndrome despite suddenly stopping taking meds before so it might be different for you?

I've never had any problems with a drink or two on SSRI's. My doctor advised me, essentially, that if I wanted to drink I should first try it in a safe environment (at home or with friends who know that it might affect me weirdly) so that I have an idea of whether I personally need to avoid alcohol.

One time I had recently changed when I took my meds (evening rather than am) and forgot that I'd had my pill only an hour or so beforehand. I had a drink, and holy bejeesus that was hands down the worst nausea I've ever had without puking.

DEFINITELY take it slow and drink in a safe environment when you first start new meds. one drink with trusted friends is a good starting point, actually!

Lexapro absolutely made me more sensitive to alcohol. one time after i'd been on it a couple months, i had a couple other similarly-built friends over for drinks. we each had 2 gin & tonics, a friend finished my second one! the others were mildly tipsy... and i blacked out. O_O my other friends thought i must have been on something else, E or weed or something. nope, just lexapro and 1.75 drinks.

Try giving it a go with simpler drinks. For example, I got gin with ginger ale, since it contained on alcohol type. I would also avoid rum at first, rum hits hard and weird unless it's really high quality, and it's the only thing guaranteed to give me a hangover. Also, avoid anything too sugary or sweet, those tend to hide how much you are taking and have a harder time pacing.

My meds (Effexor and Wellbutrin) have made me more sensitive, but since I had a pretty high tolerance and processed alcohol pretty fast it doesn't bother me. I'm at a more average tolerance now, which also means I spend less if I have to buy drinks to reach the pleasant buzz to tipsy stages.

When I started, I started with a single drink one outing, then two in two hours in the next outing, and got to three in the third before feeling that I had a handle on it and no cancelling of my meds (for dysthymia). Since then the max I've drunk is four, and I always space it out. Have fun, you're doing well :)
