A Series of Unfortunate Events thread! I didn't see one, but if there is already one, just link me and I'll move there. The Netflix series is coming out Friday the 13th, I'm so excited!!! Tbh, I didn't really get all of the little pieces of the series when I read it years ago, but I still enjoyed it regardless. I'm thinking about trying to reread parts of it between now and Friday, maybe now I'm more equipped to keep track of everything, lol.
IT'S HERE Spoiler im only like 30 seconds in but the i wanna yell about how much i love the theme song im completely failing at wordsing rn but it [words abt why i think it's so good]
OH I KNEW I WAS FORGETTING SOMETHING ABOUT FRIDAY THE 13TH--- liveblogging incoming probably once i actually get around to watching it (which, to my grief, can't be today because i gotta sleep god damn it)
Spoiler: episode 1 heads up, I'm probably gonna be unable to be critical of this at least at first so hey here comes hype OH THEYVE KEPT THE 'TO BEATRICE'S IM AAAA i have watched maybe 3 or 4 episodes of that one show with the piemaker that makes things come back to life but this is reminding me of that show which is a good thing I LOVE THE CHILDREN'S INTRODUCTIONS AND HOW VIOLET AND KLAUS ARE FROM THE START SHOWN AS EQUALS thank u 0 social skills poe i genuinely can't remember most of the plot of these books bc it's been so long and i never managed to get my hands on all of them but that sure does look like someone using a magnifying glass to set that fire. was that a thing??? PRESUMABLY THAT WAS A VERY IMPORTANT THING I SHOULD BE REMEMBERING -10 social skills poe man wear ur seatbelt i ran out of steam w the liveblogging bc from thepoint where they meet olaf and onwards it'd just be endless quotes and keyboardmashes everything is so delightfully theatrical they are really not playing around with the colours haha oh my god theyre singing???? omfg 'a certain escargot' no no no no stop making the baby cry DUDE D U D E JESUS oh wow this series is going to absolutely ruin me everytime they drop the joking tone isn't it there was absolutely nothing funny about that slap jesus christ oh, hey parents i.... legit did not know they survived. that was not a thing i was aware of. never got that far in the books (which i now want to reread AGAIN, smh)
Spoiler so far it seems like the show is being a LOT more open with later plot details, and it's also being more blatant with the subtler parts or the story? i dont remember the books super well either...... (im on ep 3 rn) also netflix is doing a thing where it skips the intro song automatically but i recomend backing up and watching it, they wrote different lyrics for each story arc!
i'm four episodes in right now! i read all the books when i was a kid and own most of them (i'm missing books 7, 9, and 11. not certain why.) so far i am liking the show a lot! it definitely seems like it's being faithful to the tone of the books, narrator and everything. i can't say for certain how faithful it is to the details without having read them at all recently, but it seems like it's a good adaptation so far! i also have caught at least one reference to events that happen later in the series, most notably Spoiler: i think it's a reference to book 11? that mention of a dangerous fungus, which i remember being a plot element in one of the later books. there are probably more such references that i didn't catch, of course also, Spoiler: episode 1 i do think it's interesting that they've revealed the parents' survival so early! i don't remember learning that until the end of the series, maybe even the very last book... also i have to wonder if they released the show on a friday the thirteenth on purpose, given the meaning of that date and/or the fact that the series has 13 books
I'm 100% sure they did! xD Also, I reread the first two books and have watched the first three eps so far! Spoiler: ep 3 They're changing a lot about the reptile room, but it's interesting!! and they bring in the movie thing way early which is awesome because that's one of the things that stuck with me for the longest time!! Spoiler: ep 1 also i totally missed that the parents survived in the books, holy shit??? i know i was very confused from about book 8 on so it's very possible that I just completely missed that. i legit thought they just changed that for the series. i was super surprised too bc they were being pretty faithful for other things ((including ACTUAL QUOTES FROM THE BOOKS AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH)) Spoiler SUPER OPEN. there's like... almost no mention of the secret spy stuffs in the first two books other than snicket implying that there are bad guys after him and in the two books so far, he's only mentioned beatrice like once and from what i remember, he brings her up a lot more often later on...
I'm on episode 4 now really enjoying the general tone of the series am also enjoying the hilarious mix of competence and incompetence all the adults have. jeez Spoiler: stuff and yeah no god I don't even remember there being spy stuff, that's how much of the books I recall (....but also i was p oblivious as a child. if there were bg hints to something i probably didn't catch them). Didn't know their parents were alive, didn't know secret society bs (VF? what does that really stand for tho bc I doubt 'voluntary firefighters' or w/e Snicket said in the 1st episode it lmao that seems rather narrow for a secret society purpose) EITHER WAY am looking forward to seeing what the backstory w that stuff is like i legit still had the 'eye symbol=olaf=evil???' association when it very clearly seems to be.... more than that pfffft
Spoiler: season spoilers yeah same i remember none of this spy stuff being in the books this early on but i am obvivous so idk. i think they're banging you over the head with that in thhe show so stuff people might have missed in the books becomes stuff that even the un oblivious take note? or to keep the show interesting, iirc the first few books felt pretty repetitive and predictable so this could be their way of making the story interesting from the start? cause i... dont rememeber scenes of peru or flying a plane or anything. it might have been mentioned casually but i probably didn't pick up on it. i dont remember being aware there was More Going On than just a greedy man and an incompetent society until........ several books in?? yeah also the quagmires. i dont remember them ar ALL damn i need to reread all these books the tone of the show is just. so good. it's fittijg to the series and loyal to the books and i love the 4th wall breaking
Hmmm i should try to watch the series it sounds good! I had all 13 books plus the bestrice files and maybe the unauthorized autobiography? But Spoiler: spoips i never realized/dont remember the parents survived? What the heck
i want violets entire warderobe Spoiler: episode 5 i do enjoy the narration overlapping dialogue thing they've got going on throughout this series it's nice (sidenotes that thinking abt narration reminded me of: "Lemony" "I've told you not to use that word" :side-eyes emoji: & .....fuck i forgot but THERE WAS SOMETHING, PROBABLY, ) the thing under that sign looks like a sword is someone going to die by virtue of sword falling on them????? :/ i thought this was the flesh-eating leeches thing. were those only in the movie? they legit gave me nightmares i wouldn't dare to step on the floor in my room bc what if the floor had turned to leeches 'peppermints' oh no who's allergic aw so they're allergic. then i'm slightly less worried abt that particular thing okay so it is the leeches place. and the rickety building that will definitely not fall apart in any way shape or form place. cool that book is too thin to contain a full history of nouns. you liar also, i am not looking forward to the part where all of aunt josephines paranoia actually happens, and am very much hoping i'm remembering that wrong i got distracted from the liveblogging again that's gonna be a reoccuring pattern does that- that stone says beatrice dude wtf for the record, i have no idea what the beatrice thing is about! i didn't know that was a part of the narrative! for me it's always just been those words at the start that make me very sad! speaking of which i can't see well enough to check but i'm really curious abt the newspaper headlines in the first episodes specifically, im curious abt whether there were any fun things among the smaller articles bc that's a good standard place for easter eggs :')
Spoiler: miserable mill/end of season spoilers what do people think of the parent switcheroo? i think it was really well done. it fooled me, at least
Spoiler: episode 7 i okay i knew their parents weren't gonna walk in there when they kept going on abt the door but they did genuinely pull the rug out from under my feet with that. that fucked with me for real. jeez ((weren't they in the photo though?????? did i imagine that. that's a legit thing that couldve happened bc i'm practically faceblind but j e e z)) (sidenote: who names a child 'quigly'. why?) ................I'M SO WHAT W H A T god damn it now i can't trust the narrative anymore bc this is extremely confusing >:I i'm just gonna sit here feeling stupid while i click on next episode (SOMETHING IS LYING BUT WHAT ONLY THE MANSION PART??? OR THE ENTIRETY OF THE REST OF IT I'M AUGH)
Spoiler unless there's some sort of definite resolution abt this in e8 i'm gonna spend the rest of the month wondering if this is legit or just you messing with me
Spoiler: halfway through episode 8 ohh okay see this is why i don't binge watch things i get like twice as confused so mystery parents part of VF (which might actually be the voluntary firewhatever but W H Y are they only dedicated to stopping olaf from setting things( like ants, and houses) on fire with magnifying glasses?? or is it the figurative 'putting out fires'), but not the baudelaires' parents. okay, fine. that would explain why they were still in the photo. will they be the baudelaires parents? i mean someone's gotta take care of these kids sooner or later. so they might as well- OH JESUS CHRIST PLEASE STOP BURNING DOWN HOUSES THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS DOES ANYONE AROUND HERE GET TO KEEP THEIR HOME
Spoiler: end of season MORE ORPHANS??? SIBLING TEAM-UPS???? also that photo tho put the thingie together kids do it also, thing #1 to learn from all this: never ever wait with explaning things. never. haha i actually really like the ending song. nice ......i need season 2 right now do we have an eta on that yet P.S. i'm sorry for spamming the thread
dropping in for now to say that Spoiler: spoilers, black comedy 'i may not be your husband... but i am your father!' is a line that has made me laugh hysterically every time i hear it since i was a tiny, and last night was no different. i've been cackling internally over it all morning omfg
Spoiler: end of season spoilers HOLY FUCK THE BAUDELAIRES' PARENTS ARE THE QUAGMIRE TRIPLETS' PARENTS????? did I seriously miss something that big in the books??? what the hell!!!! weren't they about the same age as violet? so how is that possible? how could the parents raise two sets of children at the same time. ahhhhh i'm so confuseddddd -------- Spoiler: comparing to books, possible season spoilers like i know i missed a bunch of stuff in the books, but I just reread the first two and there's no mention of the spy stuff there. the quagmires do come in in book 5, though, I just checked (i thought they were later) also @Erica it's VFD, and it stands for lots and lots of things. like voluntary fire department (ep 1) and veritable functional dictionary (ep 8) i didn't notice any others because I wasn't looking for them, but there are probably a lot :D ------------------------- That's what I said xD Spoiler: reply .... oh. that makes much more sense than them being both sets of parents. thank God, i'm not as completely oblivious as I thought!
Spoiler: reply okay good i wasn't imagining things then... the spy stuff threw me for a loop because i didnt remember it being in the early books At All i think they included it because it's a show and they want to keep people interested (and to he fair the first several books have pretty repetative plots) and also setting up the spy stuff early probably means they dont have to set it up later when it actually becomes relevent? which is probably better in the long run, because movie/tv adaptions often suffer from not having enough time to adequetly explore stuff that a book is able to and i can see this as a way around that.
