My gf and I will be moving from Minnesota to Georgia. We need to hire a moving trust with her furniture and I need things cheaper rather than convenient. I don't have a car so I cannot drive myself, my father is moving my person, we just don't have a way to move approx one truckload of stuff yet. What is the cheapest yet most reputable mover you know of/what is the cheapest way to get this done? I'm still stressing cheap over reputable but it would be nice to not lose our earthly goods.
I moved from Florida to Iowa, and the only way to do it was to rent a U-Haul for our crap. A friend volunteered to drive it, and we paid his hotel fees for the two nights we needed to stop somewhere. It should be said, even driving ourselves and moving our shit with our friend helping, it cost a couple thousand dollars.
If you have multiple drivers and can take turns, it's almost certainly cheapest to rent a truck and drive your stuff yourself. I looked into this when I was moving from Chicago to DC and all the other options cost a LOT more. For such a long move, Penske may be your best bet for a truck rental because they don't charge for mileage on one-way moves.
Yeah, it's a lot cheaper to move if you can not stop for hotels/sleeping. Unfortunately, I didn't have that option, but you might!
Oh, I cannot drive a truck. Nope, unfortunately, I need someone who will put my stuff into a vehicle and move it for me. That's pretty much the only way at this point, I'm just trying to find the least painful company to trust, unless there are any brilliant workarounds that I do not know of. There's no one in my party that has ever driven anything bigger than a car before, it's just not possible.
Are you able to get the stuff out of the house itself on your own? You may want to try one of the moving container options, like Upack or Pods. Generally they drop off a container and you just pack your stuff into it, and then they transport it to the new location and you unpack it yourself.
@kitarakir That may be an option, but everything I've seen has suggested that that's just as expensive, if not more, than what I was looking at. Is it a significantly lower price point and I've been looking at the wrong stuff?... I can physically move my stuff into a pod, but... I live in an apartment, and I don't think it's legal, and it may not be possible, for me to keep something large on the public road for a long time. That's something I'm not sure about. Maybe they're not as large as I'm imagining.
We move often - from GA to other parts of the country and back again. Do-it-yourself if you have a truck driver friend is by far the best. National chains is next. Local movers willing to go outside their usual range typically charge huge amounts more than the chains with all kinds of surcharges, and the standard of care for your possessions is much lower. Upack and similar services have not been any lower cost that we can see, but a lot more labor intensive, takes longer (pro movers can do stuff REALLY fast, even if you only halfway did what you were supposed to).
They generaly fit in a regular parking spot at largest, and some are smaller. You can get some general estimates on http://www.pods.com or http://www.upack.com If you park on the street, you may need a permit. If you have a driveway or a dedicated parking space, you should be able to put it there. Pods has ones as small as 7x7, and up to 16x8 and UPack ones are about 6x7 and you just use multiple ones if needed.
Ah, I was looking at UPack. their price is... better than expected frankly. Right now theyre pretty high on the list of possibilities because I've seen good things said about them and, again, price possible
It's definitely something to look into. Prices vary a lot depending on location, time, how much stuff you have, etc. I think UPack also has an option where you bring the stuff to the transfer location and pack the container up there to save yourself the delivery fee. If you are near them, and can fit your stuff in your car over a couple of loads to do it that way, you may be able to save some money that way as well. Whether it would be worth it would depend on how much stuff you have/how many trips it would be and the distance.
