i am trying to acquire a greyhound rn! plz ask me questions about the breed! i am bothering all my friends w/ greyhound facts! if i don't know the answer to something that's awesome because it means you've found a gap in my knowledge, of which i'm sure there are many, and i can work on remedying that asap! so! greyhounds! yes!
HI I LOVE DOGS! Greyhounds are really fucking interesting, but sighthounds in general are super interesting. TELL ME YOUR FAVORITE GREYHOUND FACTS
ah geez! how can i pick! everything about greyhounds is greyt! um! greyhounds are one of the oldest recognizable breeds! they were mentioned by name in the bible! literally every greyhound site i visit seems to think that that's super important so i'll toss it in here greyhounds have less than half the body fat percentage of other breeds of doggos! that prolly holds true 4 sighthounds in general, but that's why they need lots of soft stuff to lay on! due to the small amount of fat, their medical care is different from that of a non-sighthound and you need to find an experienced vet, because otherwise you can really fuck your pupper up! they have a lower incidence of hip dysplasia than other large breeds, and are in general pretty hardy! bone cancer and bad teeth can be problems, tho greys get cold p easily, so it's important to dress them up in hilarious clothes when it's chilly out! literally the first thing imma do once my grey is secured is knit them a snood in rural areas, make sure that your fawn colored greyhounds wear orange or reflective stuff! they look like deer from a distance and that can be bad news bears if ppl are hunting! the least common color greyhounds come in is blue, which is funny because blue's just the name used in animal colors to mean grey and they're called greyhounds. the most common colors are permutations of brindle and black! the ppl who train the racers use marshmallows as treats! greyhounds look like sick horses! this is very very important! so important! there is lots more but i am not braining v well atm Spoiler: bonus tiny greyhounds! they're from my fave kennel, blu too 8)
i was pretty sure they were, but that's so awesome. we bred fast doggos and i love it. they're so good
scientifically, where is the best place to pet a greyhound, or alternatively, apply scritches? actual question: are they related to whippets or is that just convergent dog breeding giving us two doggos that have the same type of build?
an excellent question! much like any other dog, this is highly subjective! if you want a more definitive answer, i suggest you go on a greyhound-scritching pilgrimage to find out the truth for yourself! and whippets were bred from greys, yeah! a good example of convergent dog breeding would be the greyhound and the galgo, which are extremely similar visually (at least the smooth coated galgos are) but surprisingly unrelated!
It might just be my impression, but do greyhounds always tuck their first tails close to their legs? I have never seen a greyhound with a tail in a position other than "scared" or "not feeling so good", not even in the "relaxed" angle I'm used to seeing in other dogs.
I KNOW STUFF ABOUT GREYHOUNDS TOO but I dunwanna hijack your thread so I will wait for permission to ramble as well Do you have any cool medieval pics of greyhounds? (Also I'm wondering if the etymology of the name actually refers to the colour grey or something like 'gre' or 'grie' which might mean something else...)
@E.D. the breed is thought 2 be 4k years old! or at least doggos that bear a striking resemblance to greys date back that long, haha. i doubt that they've been a breed breed for that long. and they're sighthounds, so they were bred for hunting/coursing, but now they're mostly bred for races. 8) @PotteryWalrus omg dude feel free! and i've seen a couple explanations for where the name came from, but i think the general consensus is that they color grey doesn't have much to do w/ it- ur right on the gre/grie thing. one idea is that it originally meant 'dog hunter' or 'first among dogs' edit: cool dog pic
Also you would like to know that there is a man who lives on my street with two greyhounds that I call the greyhound guy. His greyhounds are old rescued racing dogs, one is named zeus, they are very sweet and quiet and I pet them when I can. My brother thinks greyhound guy is gay because he has seen another man walk the greyhounds, and he does ping my gaydar a bit, but I am not sure. My gaydar also gets pinged by artists soooo. But the greyhounds are very nice and they have quilted jackets. Alas I have never seen them wear snoods, which would make my year (I love dogs in snoods you get two varieties-goblin wearing an elf hat or concerned burrito)
That is the best pic I could possibly ever ask for because not only does it contain ye olde doge it also involved The Weird Snail Meme which is the best medieval drawing thing ever. Things that I know about greyhounds - as mentioned, they are a very, very old breed, and in fact have the narrowest most keel-shaped chest of any domestic dog. (the wolf actually has an even narrower chest - you can't fit your hand between the forelegs of a wolfie, not that you'd try.) Whippets and lurchers were invented because there were once laws about The Peasants owning - gasp!- a purebred dog, so greyhounds were bred with terriers and other similar types - I believe whippets were originally a collie/sighthound mix, for bonus speed and intelligence points - to create all-rounder puppers that could poach uh, totally legally hunt game as well as help with livestock in the field. Greyhounds were always hunting dogs, though, which means that even if the breed is only legally used for chasing a fake stuff bunny round a track, they still have super hyped prey drives. Do not adopt a former racing doggy unless you are sure they will be okay with your kitties - aka That Roughly Rabbit Sized Fur Thing That Runs Away When I Chase It, Yay!
