I noticed today that while we have a cross-fandom thread going for so-bad-it's-good / maybe just-plain-bad fanfiction, I didn't see one for the more positive examples of fan-writing. I bet we all could use some recommendations for reading material anyway, so here is a thread to post THE BEST fanfiction! stories that gripped you, moved you, amused you, stories that you enjoyed reading! to get us started, here's an old favorite of mine! a Kingdom Hearts fanfic that reads as half rip-roaring adventure/half tongue-in-cheek critique of fandom writing at the time, starring some much-underloved (and well written) characters! I highly recommend it.

Maleficent recruits forgotten ideas called Dispirations and gives them form as her shapeshifting minions, Mickey is saved by Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and there's a whole realm of every idea that ever was discarded called Inpotentia. The Antebellum series of Undertale fanfictions: http://archiveofourown.org/series/379513 Has Frisk and Chara living before the human/monster war, being adopted by the monsters, and trying to learn magic. Also, Mt Ebott is a volcano. A volcano that, unlike in canon, has yet to be stabilized by monster magitech. And there's human bigotry against monsters, too.
That One Rorschach Genderbend Fic that I mention a lot when discussing genderbends: My Body is a Cage. (As @keltena put it, "Standard warning, for, well, Rorschach"- he's a character from Watchmen who's pretty much every -ism and -phobia Tumblr hates, and has an often extremely disturbing backstory, so. General warning.)
Rather fond of an overwatch foc a friend of mine wrote recently. I really lile the care he put into the folklore worldbuildong for what is ultimately a porn fic. Called The Fish and the Swallow. Takes place in an au based on the holiday skins and the Junkenstein mode. Its a Pharmercy thing.
Ashes of the Past by Saphroneth. It's a Pokemon humour/adventure fanfiction where Cyrus ends the world so Arceus grabs Ash and has Sir Aaron's ghost train him in basic Aura use to end him back and stop the end of the world. Ash decides to redo his entire journey, basically level grinding for fighting Cyrus. Arceus may or may not be helping by upping the difficulty of everything, resulting in things like competent versions of various random bit characters from the anime, competent Team Rocket, consistent characters and power levels, everybody learning at least basic Aura manipulation, and Ash throwing around Pokemon moves like Protect and Aura Sphere. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7262793/1/Ashes-of-the-Past https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/ashes-of-the-past-pokemon-peggy-sue.258921/ The forum link is the forum where the author posts it all early, in daily snippets, for proofreading.
