I thought I'd make a little thread for discussing Christmas hijinks. This isn't private or only for studiohouse people, so feel free to add your own, especially if you need help or suggestions with a holiday thing. :D So yes, @jumpingjacktrash: here are the foods off the top of my head that sound like they mightcould be awesome: - green bean casserole (with cayenne if y'all like it that way--that's how my aunt always made it and it was killer) - colcannon (oh god yeeeees @_@) - hotdish. hotdish? christmas hotdiiiish, we wish you a merry hotdish, 'tis the season to be hotdish, grandma got ran over by a hotdish, hotdish doesn't look like a word anymore wheee - fancy frou-frou sparkling apple cider or sparkling grape juice Also, my grandma has this amazing appetizer she makes where it's barbecued bacon wrapped around a water chestnut and pinned in place with a toothpick. I went ahead and asked my grandma for the recipe so that I can take a stab at making it, so if this sounds like something you'd like to put in your faces, lemme know.
colcannon is go! i will def make! i'm not a green bean casserole fan, so i have never made it; if y'all wanna make and bring it that's cool. what kind of hotdish? it's kind of a broad category. :D
oh, hah, I thought hotdish was just a layer of hamburger, a layer of veggies, and a layer of tatertots with cream of mushroom added in X) hm, hm... http://www.midwestliving.com/food/comfort/best-casserole-hot-dish/?page=24 http://www.midwestliving.com/food/comfort/best-casserole-hot-dish/?page=0 http://www.midwestliving.com/food/comfort/best-casserole-hot-dish/?page=1 http://www.midwestliving.com/food/comfort/best-casserole-hot-dish/?page=5 these look pretty good :d
hm, pork sausage, wild rice, and mushroom sounds really good! there's also a three-cheese garlic and pepperoni potato thing seebs and i invented, or my mom's classic tuna noodle broccoli thang, which is very midwestern and very ordinary but also just super soothing and good.
yeah, hotdish isn't a specific dish, it's a type of dish, like 'stew' or 'salad'. basically it's a one-pan baked meal; usually some starchy item like rice, noodles, or potatoes, mixed or layered with meat and/or cheese and possibly some veg, with a sauce, all baked together.
oh, random question: did we want cookies, for like decorating purposes or whatnot? (also I don't know why but I've been dying for walnut chocolate chip cookies for basically forever) It was fun the last time we did that, and you do have those ninja gingerbread men now, but if you think it would be cramming too much into one day I totally dig.
we could do that on a different day maybe, but yeah, i think that might be too much. i'm concerned about my stamina just with regular holiday cooking and socializing. that used to leave me bedridden for two or three days afterwards, and even though i'm MUCH better now, i am also very bored with pain. :P
heyyy i decided i want to make a ham. so when y'all do the shopping that should go on the list, along with spuds for the colcannon, and some kind of nice bread rolls or sth, and idk a dessert of some kind? tho we do have LOTS of sweets. i haven't even touched the date rolls you guys brought me, idk if those are even still good. i just don't have that much of a sweet tooth and there were so many sweets.
oh, and i will make the sausage/rice/mushroom casserole as requested, i think morell sausage is already on the list, need mushrooms, got the rest. might add cheese on top when i bake it -- what do you think, sharp aged swiss? i mean it's a pretty bland hot dish as-is. not sure if the spinach i have is still good. will have to check. have green onion, milk, butter. need potatoes.
