This Friday I will be going to a Harry Potter theme party. Since I already have a black cape thing that I think can double as robes and a time turner, I am going as Hermione Granger.

I think I can 'poof' out my long dark brown hair to sort of resemble a description of Hermione in the books. However, I have no idea how to go about doing this. I have no hair dryer (though I could possibly borrow my housemate's) and I have no idea about hair products.

Anyone with experience at this who knows what kind of stuff I should put in my hair to pull this off? I have dark brown hair at least halfway down my shoulder blades, and it's very thick.

make lots and lots of tiny twists while your hair is still sort of wet.
this is achieved by taking a strand of hair, dividing it into two strands then twisting each strand clockwise, then winding both twisted strands around eachother anti-clockwise.
you should do this with all your hair in relatively small portions (each strand shouldn't be thicker than your index finger? but don't make them too small)
the result will be EXTREMELY poofy

Is there any way to do this with product? Or to do it in the morning and then bind it together professionally enough to be able to go to the hospital with it for an entire working day?
Because I probably won't be home until five-thirty at the latest, and my hair probably won't dry enough before eight-thirty which is when the party starts...

oof yeah I'd do that the night before and keep everything in a secure headwrap
just take a cute scarf and put the twists in there, then make kinda a scarf-turban.

@IvyLB that poof look is really cool.
Alternately, @Emma, you can backcomb dry hair: take hold of chunks at a time and comb it gently towards the root. It tangles up and gets v poofy. A bit of hairspray will keep it that way. You'll need to use plenty of conditioner to comb it back out again without damaging your hair, though.

braids also work, in lieu of twists- it does work better with more, smaller braids, but even two works, and would probably work even better if you did French braids or another type instead of basic ones.

So I did the braids and they turned out quite well! I had a blast last night as Hermione :P I had loads of people admiring the details and it was really fun :)
