Whether you're a Free Magic necromancer or a Charter mage, or you're from Ancelstierre and think that all of that sort of thing is a superstitious fantasy, come say hi!

And also, watch this video announcement by Garth Nix about his next book :D

Oh dang I forgot Garth Nix was even a thing

I really enjoyed the Abhorsen trilogy, and I was heavy into the Keys to the Kingdom series, but now that I think of it I never actually finished that. I lost track of it just after Superior Saturday came out, I think. Dang, I should pick that up again.

The ending of the Keys To The Kingdom series has been one of the biggest influences on my writing tbh

Same! A Garth Nix to me should be mildly-bearded and wearing a cloak with a hood that shades much of his face. As impractical as that might be in modern times.

oh god yes and was anyone else's fave char the dog? well god dog. weird dog. doggy. she was so neat. i adored her.

preferred the first and third books in terms of protagonists, but there was a lot of good stuff to drool over concerning the magic and all that in the second (oh lord what was her name. she was raised with the future-seeing blond people or something.)

i am really overtired and even less wordsy than normal, whoo. i shall return when i am more legible.

also ohmygosh the purgatory/circles of hell thing was SO GREAT

I'm saddened i've never really experimented with writing something using it. i don't remember this series that often, sadly :(

Lirael, I think? The second is actually my favorite because of her, and because I'm a slut for complicated magic systems being carefully laid down so that they're internally consistent.

Lirael is the protagonist of the second and third books, yeah, and man do I love the Charter for being a fantastically internally consistent magic system. Also, for being a thing that's not specific to one set of people - sure you have the Abhorsen and Clayr, who have special abilities
because their bloodlines stem from two of the seven pre-Charter Free Magic creatures that created life on the world,
but anyone can be baptised into the Charter at any point in their lives, whether from the Old Kingdom or no.

Oh damn, I checked back over several pages in fantown, but I must have missed it or given up too early.

(Also, has anyone read Clariel? Thoughts?)

I have as well! I liked it, but I definitely was expecting more... oomph? I don't know how to explain it. It was pretty good, but it also felt very much like a backstory (which I mean... it was...........) and less like a fully realized story in itself?

I adored all the information it gave us about what the Old Kingdom was like before Kerrigor fucked it sideways, and of course we already knew she was going to turn out bad because she gets name-dropped in Abhorsen, and oh my god Clariel is the Star Wars prequels.

(Also I really, really, really did not like the use of her being aromantic/asexual/both to imply she's always been weird and Other and not really suited to humanity because no, no thank you.)
