So I've decided to try these things out again. Partly because I caved and got Sunless Sea and its dlc this winter sale. Partly because I don't know let's see if we can get anywhere in Fallen London this time. So why not have a thread for all the games? Be it Fallen London, the Silver Tree, Sunless Seas, or the still in development Sunless Skies?

Currently I'm working at Fallen London with a Jame cosplay character whose name there is Jamethiel Knorth. Stuck in Spite right now and I'm grinding up towards having 60 Shadowy since that's the recommended amount to head to Flit with? I'm collecting a bunch of crap and selling off what things I know I can get back fast and reliably from the things I'm doing to grind my Shadowy. With this I've managed to get some clothes and a gold fish. Also a place to live. I will continue working on this. Thing. Jame thus far is working with the Gracious Widow and her smuggling operation, drinks to the Cheery Man, is living in an abandoned observatory, trying to avoid the Constables. Thankfully confounding them and some workman's clothes are helping with that last bit.

Sunless Sea meanwhile has been harder to start out with because it's just so fucking hard. I can get fucked by the rng in Fallen London and I have little idea of what I'm doing but I'm not in danger of Jame just fucking dying and having to start all over in it. That is the case with Sunless Sea and that is the big reason I haven't bought the game till now. I did some reading on how to start up and I've found some success with Salt Lions runs. Working on getting stuff that I can send to my heirs. Namely getting a house and a will set up and I do have a weapon better than the starting weapon that I've passed down at least once now. Beyond that I'm getting better at dodging foes, managing my terror, and I'm off on the search for new ports. I'm trying to find as many as I can and see what can be sold and bought in those ports. I want to set up a trade route once I can since I hear that the Salt Lions will dry up after a bit. I haven't really found anything that I can set up right now though. Current captain is a former urchin named Marvin who is having an affair with his ships' doctor. He also finally has a lead on what happened to his father's bones. My one before this was a defrocked priest named Agatha who wanted to see the world. Also she had a girlfriend in port that she was all faithful to and shit. Someone who took her mind off even the ambition to see the world. AND THEN A FUCKING PIRATE SHIP WITH THE WORLD'S FASTEST FIRING RATE MURDERED HER AND HER CREW.

    those bastards

I liked Agatha a lot. And now she is dead. But Marvin is not in part because he has like 70 fucking Veils right now or some shit.

Or you could just cheat the fuck out of Sunless Sea and never have to worry about money or fuel, that's also an option.

Or I could not do that because I like having to manage fuel and money. I do like the general feel of the game, especially now that I have an idea of how to play it. Just that central loop is hard to figure out when you start and I don't think the game is tutorialized particularly well. So unless you look up guides, cheat, or are exceptionally patient with failure it's kind of painful to start the game. Now that I have an idea of how to actually play the damn thing though I'm enjoying the slow, oppressive nature of how it plays. Kind of like a roguelike really? Like starting Angband was fucking baffling and discouraging but finding out how to play the thing made banging out failed dives fun.

Honestly I had so many deaths at the beginning that I don't really feel bad about coasting, since I've gotten to see so much more story and locations now that I'm using mods. I'm just realizing maybe that sounded a little aggressive and dismissive of that style of playing. I think it's impressive when people power through it, I just died constantly.

Yeah no I get that. Just I kind of like that sort of slog myself? At least once I'm able to get a handle on it. Different people have different ways of enjoying games and Sunless Sea is one that does allow methods other than its slow and oppressive standard play. Not like say Bloodborne where if you can't pull off what it demands of you technically you're kind of fucked unless you can summon people to help.

I have tried very hard to like sunless sea, and I love the atmosphere and the bits of story I’ve been able to get to and even enjoy the mechanics and the slog somewhat, but my attention span is just too short to get past the early game :( maybe i’ll finally cave in and cheat myself up some extra echoes.

@Lambda can I ask what mods you’re using? I don’t recall there being a steam workshop for sunless sea.

Not sure what mods they're using but here's the nexus for it. You can mod steam games easily enough. Just have to navigate the steam folders and drop things in there usually.

Is there a mod that returns the combat to the turn-based card game they had back in the beta, rather than the real-time top-down shooter that apparently Everyone wanted it turned into? (I don't know who wanted that, because the turn-based card game was thematically appropriate and also did require skill but didn't necessarily require being good at aiming and such. But apparently this was what people wanted.)

Because in case you haven't guessed, I have been bitter for actual years about the combat system getting changed out. (I will probably get around to reinstalling the game and picking it back up, though. It is fun, and I haven't poked at it in literal ages. Just...I miss the old combat system. I was good at the old combat system.)

I haven't been able to find one on the nexus, unfortunately.

i haven't played any of the games but apparently one player was so relentless in sending alexis rats that he created the quality No Longer Accepting Any Further Rats for himself and made it so that anyone with that quality couldn't get sent rats

the player proceeded to make a fan event where everyone sent all the other failbetter devs vast quantities of rats
their rat-spamming antics also resulted in the Ratness tab

    its so great
