It is late. I have no impulse control. I am sure we have a thread for general language learning shit. But let's make one for Irish in particular because fuck my life.

Have you ever wanted to watch tv and stuff in Irish? THEN TODAY IS YOUR LUCKY DAY. TG4 puts up their programs temporarily online. So you can enjoy shit like some documentary about the seas in Ireland, confusing television for toddlers, and the NEWS. FOR FREE. ONLINE.

But Aondeug I am not getting enough Irish language news in my life, you say. You also bring up that you'd really like for some sort of section on a site for Irish language learners. You know like what Al'Jazeera has but with Irish instead of Arabic. I got that shit too.

Book wise I'm currently making use of Ó Siadhail's Learning Irish. I like the focus it has on IPA. I wish more books weren't scared to use shit like that. It takes a bit of learning to pick up, but once you do it's really lovely for figuring out how sounds are even working. I have some other books that I got illicitly a while back that I haven't really taken the time to look at. The Ó Siadhail seems to be nice book though and it was suggested by someone who I know actually speaks the dialect in it so fuck it.

Also Acey's mother already said it but it goes with mentioning again that duolingo is kind of sketchy where things like grammar are concerned. Not just in a lack of explaining it, but also in errors. Person I know who suggested the Ó Siadhail text mentioned an issue with incorrect mutations in particular, I know. I sadly can't say more about what it fucks up because I honestly don't know too well? I mostly use it as a way of picking up new words, personally.

also holy shit both the secret of kells and song of the sea are available as gaeilge

Copies of the DVD with the Irish language tracks can be picked up from Cartoon Saloon's store.

Erica occasionally vaguely like a person

there's a class in old irish at my school and i am 100% doing that next semester
it's only 7.5 points (full semester is 30) but i'm so hyped

....sort of assuming it's not very likely to have much in common with modern irish, though :P

It has quite a bit in common with modern Irish due to them being related. That and a lot of "Old Irish" is more Middle Irish than anything. There's a large fluctuation in the texts we have due to dates when shit was written.

They are very, very different though. You won't be able to speak the one only knowing the latter!

Anyway if you're looking at Old Irish be sure to get the Thurnysen texts. You can get his grammar for free in PDF form online I know. It's not a course, but it is very, very handy as a resource.
