I've got a friend in a rough situation, has anyone dealt with the foods stamps system in California? Looking for help and advice to offer him.
1) Have SOME source of income, but small. They do not like "homeless" here, which means "no income" in some of their parlance. 2) Have some sort of place to live that does not appear on paperwork as a shelter of ANY sort. Even battered women shelters are 'suspect'. 3) Have evidence of being here more than a year. There is a STRONG bias against out of state people (like extra taxes on motel rooms for the first 60 days) 4) Have evidence of trying to look for work even if it is in jobs they are obviously not qualified for, although strive to get letters from jobs that are close. 5) Apply for every gov assistance they can - even if they know they will be refused. The application itself matters because they will be asked if they applied.
Okay. Number 4 is going to be a sticky point - he's been out of work because he's been taking care of his mother after a series of surgeries, so all they're living on right now is her pension. He's California born and raised, though, so 1 to 3 are covered...
We got Mouse covered by calling him a "personal assistant" for Grim and Me since he drives for us - he was accepted as "part time employed" so didn't need to show looking for work.
