Weird title, sorry, it was funnier in my head. So , I only get home for the summer in the last week of june, but I could reaaaaally use a summer job for the twoish months I'll be home to make up for what I'm spending while abroad. I could also really use advice on how to get a job around this time, and in general. I'm able-bodied, have anxiety but not cripplingly so, and have worked one short term service job before (state fair ice cream booth), so I'm open for most any generic college student summer job. Just need to get one. Sooo yeah! Tell me how to organize resume, when to call people and follow up, and shit like that. Is it good or annoying to show up to the store and talk to a manager???? a friend of mine did that and got the job but my anxietybrain says that it's weird and annoying
in my experience, definitely call to follow up after handing in a resume or going to an interview - thank them for their tiime/consideration, reiterate how nice it would be to work there, etc. this prevents ur application from just getting shuffled into the stack and lets them know that you really are interested! (i don't normally enjoy this step bc i fucking hate phone calls but its definitely worth powering through) i think it would be ok to talk to a manager!! introduce yourself, handshake etc, ask if theyre open for job applications. for bigger companies itll help for them to have a face attached to the name, makes your more memorable :OO resume-wise? idk much about them but my parents are mad good at them, so i have previous advice from them - subheadings are good, make things look more organized - have a section for general skills, work experience/references, etc. also, a cover letter is a good idea!!
the only advice i have on getting a job is to make it known to people you know - friends, family, anything - that you're looking. I don't know what's culturally expected during the job-hunting process where you live but I suspect that the part where having connections makes everything easier is universal, so. Do that in addition to the normal stuff. If you're lucky someone you know will know someone who works at a place looking for summer workers. (god those sentences got delightfully convoluted I'm very sorry) ((just about everyone my age i know got their summer jobs through knowing someone there - my cousin worked at my dad's place, i worked at my uncle's and am lucky enough to get to come back this summer even though my uncle quit bc working there gave me NEW connections with people who WEREN'T my uncle, my friend is a substitute teacher at her old school... like i didn't even apply for the thing at my uncle's job i'd been applying for stuff elsewhere and then he just called me and was like 'so i was talking to your mom and she says you're looking for a job'. ))
Yeah, the main problem with connections is my parents just moved to this place, and we're in new development so nearly everyone else I know from being neighbors is from out of state as well. I was figuring I'd try going to the old pet of town with all the smaller shops and walking around to see if anyone needs work there- my moms friends now with some antique shop owners over there so there's a chance I could get lucky.
