    the nights are getting longer, the leaves are beginning to turn, and the supermarkets are filling up with styrofoam glitter pumpkins. time to scare the bejeezus out of ourselves on the internet.

    this isn't necessarily for realistic, personal, "it happened to me/my uncle and idk if it was a thing" stories; those go over in 'that's unusual', which is the catch-all, year-round Weird Shit thread. this thread is for the REALLY SPOOKY STUFF -- or the spoopy stuff, if you find some hilarious creepypasta fail that's just full of narm, i don't judge. :D

    Memoirs Of A Cam-Girl is one of my new faves. As a warning, it's pretty long (it's in four parts--navigation is at the bottom), and it's very NSFW. Potential rape triggers as well, IIRC. But it's decently scary while not taking itself too seriously, and I love that.

    Also, Snopes' horror section is good for some nightmare-inducing fun.

    Straight-up horror stories, rather than Halloween Spookiness or creepypasta, but just in case people haven't read them:
    Kelly Link, The Specialist's Hat. Can be upsetting, especially if you have children or parents or know people who do.
    Charles Stross, A Colder War. Can also be upsetting, especially if you're old enough to remember the actual Cold War.

    and I don't know if it's okay to post my stuff here, but probaby it is I'm guessing? so here's Long Black Road that I wrote for Jesse a couple years ago, it's kinda creepy in places and also a bit NSFW.

    READ THE DROWNING GIRL. And Caitlin Kiernan works in general. But this one especially. Currently I've been getting through EverymanHYBRID and that is a thing I can suggest. I will say that because it is spread out all over things it might not be appealing to everyone. Still it's definitely one of the better Slenderman stories in my opinion. Makes Marble Hornets look like shit.

    but
    my favorite stuff to read, besides short shot creepypasta, is nazi ghost stories.

    (although, also in this collection, is this Amazing story about how we all went nuts during the cold war. plus ghosts and some other stuff that goes bump in the night)

    I also really love the ongoing Search and Rescue stories from r/nosleep. Very eerie, and I feel like the author has a good grasp on what catches people's interest and what freaks them out.

    The Frood Abides Doesn't Know Where His Rug Is

    one of the great things about the Search & Rescue series is that they're salted with stuff that is weird but realistic (the moose story) and just mundanely sad/scary (accidents, lost children). It adds verisimilitude to stuff like the stairs that would be over-the-top in a standard creepypasta.
