Hey there! If you didn't see in the languages/linguistics thread, I am doing a linguistic thesis! And for my thesis, I'm doing a survey to collect data. If you'd be willing to help me out, that would be great! The survey should take between 10-15 minutes and you're just expected to make some judgements about how the speaker/author feels about the situation in the sentence. For those who can use Amazon US, there are three chances to win $20 giftcards. Everything is anonymous, but if you want to participate in the raffle you need to give a name and email. Just fyi Spoiler: hiding for observational bias, DON'T LOOK IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN THE SURVEY none of your sentences have punctuation. is that intentional? 'cause it seriously affected my potential answers...

I filled it out, although I realize in retrospect I messed up a few of my answers due to not paying close enough attention to what I was clicking. Spoiler: under spoiler just in case idk For example, I marked D8 as not happy, but then I didn't realize that I also marked it as "not upset" until I moved onto the next page. I meant to put it on "more upset" side but my brain was like, the reaction is negative therefore it goes on the left hand side. Also, I wasn't always sure how to interpret "sincere". In retrospect it's kinda obvious that it was "this person's using a smiley face but are they actually happy?" but sometimes I thought it might mean, "this person's using a smiley face, are they being sarcastic and there aren't really squirrels in the yard?". Not sure why, maybe just my autistic self being wigged out by surveys.
Spoiler um. There were emoji in the sentences? I did not see any... EDIT: wtf. I just opened the survey on my phone and suddenly there are emoji. I was SO CONFUSED. Re, do you want me to take it again? My answers would be COMPLETELY different...
I think something screwed up on my end... Spoiler I didn't get any emoticons? I'm not sure if it's my adblock or another extension or what, but it was all plain sentences with no periods or emoticons. I thought it was weird and that maybe you were setting a baseline for reactions. Anyway, I had all middle-of-the-road for happy, all not upset, and all sincere. You should probably drop mine from the results. oh thank goodness I'm not alone. For the record, the main extension I think could have interfered is adblock, and I'm running chrome on Win10

Honestly, this is probably not the best survey. I've never done anything like this before, and I've gotten as much help as I can but I still doubt whether it'll actually mean anything. But it seems to be good enough for my advisor so I'm going with it. xP I really appreciate everyone's help though!! Sorry it's so confusing.
