How Do I Sell Pokemon Cards?

    Scheherazade It's a story fractal

Pretty much exactly what it says up top: I have an old, reasonably extensive collection of Pokemon cards that I don't use anymore, and I'd like to sell them. That way, someone who really wants them can have them and I can do something useful with the money.

Does anyone have any advice about how to do this, or where I should start looking, or should I just try eBay and hope for the best?

(I wasn't sure if this should go here or general chatter since it wasn't about mental health stuff, feel free to move it if it should be.)

as a Former Board Game Store employee, i actually have some knowledge about this!!! you've got a few choices, each w/ pros and cons

option a) is finding your Friendly Local Game Store and bringing in your cards for them to appraise and then, hopefully, buy from you. every store does this differently, some only buy cards of a certain rarity and some only do certain games (my store, for example, only bought magic cards, and even then we were very picky about the ones we would take). pros- you can be reasonably sure that you aren't getting scammed, and can make sure your cards are going somewhere where someone who could use them would buy them. cons- usually you do lose money for selling cards, and most stores prefer to do store credit instead of cash. also, you would actually have to Go To The Store and Interact With People, which can be pretty spoon-heavy

option b) is using a third party site like tcg player or troll & toad, which is similar to the game store option, but has the benefit of being online. i have no personal experience with selling cards to either site but i have purchased from tcg player, so they are legit, and i know our store has sold some of our cards to troll & toad before. i don't know how the process goes for selling to these places, but i believe they have you mail your cards to them and they cut you a check?? you could do more research there.

and then, option c) is using ebay. i wouldn't really recommend this one, because there's a lot of people who sell counterfeit cards on ebay & there's no real way to guarantee what you're buying is legit, so most card players don't use ebay as their first resource for buying cards. you might get someone who will want them, but i don't know for sure. i know i wouldn't buy cards off ebay, anyway. if you do decide to go the ebay route you can set your own price, but that does mean you have to do the work of finding out what a fair price is. also i thiiiiiink ebay might take a fee for selling stuff.

so yeah, those are some options. i would recommend tcg player or troll & toad (and i believe there's another one that buys cards but i can't think of the name rn) because pokemon cards are a little harder to sell (there isn't much of a market for buying individual pokemon cards the way there is for mtg) and you might not find a store who will give you much money, but it's up to you. i hope this was helpful, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask me. i don't know much but i know a couple things~
