i had no idea where to put this, so i'm settling on right here. note that this assumes you have adblock+ or Adblock installed on chrome or firefox, or an equivalent addon if you use another browser. bbbbasically this is just going to be a 'what filters block the awful' for various websites. if there's a site you need to know about, let me know, and i will update the list with how2block the annoying bits. HELPFUL ADDONS FOR SCRIPT-BLOCKING REDUNDANCY: (disclaimer: i only use chrome. D: if someone could provide links for Firefox versions i would platonically love on you forever.) Adblock or Adblock+ remain the standard in general ad-blocking. Adblock For Youtube is by the same company and nabs any Youtube ads that get through those! Adguard is a less memory-intense alternative to AB/AB+, but it's not quite as customizable. Ghostery not only blocks unwanted comments sections, but blocks website tracking information for a safer, more private browser. Ghostery Fixer is an addendum to the above that fixes some of the big websites Ghostery's liberal scriptblocking breaks so you don't have to tweak your own settings. New Xkit - the 'Anti Capitalism' addon through this extension removes tumblr's BS. Might also want to add common autoplayers. I've got most of them blocked, but I. Forget which adblock filters those are.
Looks like *vt.tumblr.com/*.mp4 can affect Tumblr-hosted videos other than ads, so that's a caveat if you want to watch something (if you don't, all the better, I guess).
UPDATE: I just got hit by the sound of a truck revving and had to mute the tab, and while I haven't found the culprit yet I did find how to get rid of the irritating logo animation! :::DDD ||secure.assets.tumblr.com/images/logo/hover-animations/*
for tumblr specifically, new x-kit added an update to the extension "anti-capitalism" that'll take care of all the auto play bullshit this post has more info
I found out that youtube and wikia comments are blockable with adblock I do not know the technical details, i just clicked "block an add on this page" and selected the comments sections, and filtered like normal
There used to be a Firefox extension that would turn all Youtube comments into "herp derp derp herp." It was beautiful.
Wikia: wikia.com##.recirculation-rail - blocks the "Trending in [category]" pane, so you don't need to see clickbait about Batman Vs. Superman when all you want to do is find out what a video game enemy's elemental weakness is. Tumblr: tumblr.com##.fullscreen-background - blocks the 404 page gifs
Decided to figure it out: tumblr.com##.header_image Blocks innocent headers too, but at least it means hovering on a bot's URL will only give tiny thumbnails of porn gifs instead of a big one.
@Choco -- for true! i just like redundancy in my adblocking, because every now and then things will fail and i like having backups of everything. i'm adding a section to the first post about helpful scriptblocking programs now, tho. :) @LadyNighteyes -- GOD BLESS. i added everything you've posted so far and i'll dig around to see if i can't find the comments section stuff. i have an addon that automatically blocks them myself so it will be a bit while i figure out how i wanna do that.
BTW, if anyone needed any more proof of how much Tumblr hates their users, they've actually changed the 404 page background element name a couple of times since I first started blocking it. This is just the current one. And renaming random crap is the exact some thing they do when they're trying to screw over adblockers and/or xkit.
@LadyNighteyes looking at it myself, it looks like it just randomly generates a media.tumblr.com gif and puts it into the category of background-image. i'm gonna see what i can do but that's REALLY hard to work around.
I mean in the sense that you used to have to block ".fullscreen-bg" and then ".fullscreen-post-bg" and now ".fullscreen-background". I'm currently consistently catching it with at last one, but the others consistently worked for a while before that.
