I'm going to grad school starting this summer! It's really exciting! It's also terrifying, because I have to have a place to live, and keep it a place I'm happy living. I have previously only lived with family, or in university-provided housing. I will not be doing either of those things. So, I figured I should make a thread for organizing my things to do, and asking for any advice you guys have! To Do List: -call realtor (friend gave me number of person who helped him find place to live in area I'm moving to) -keep in touch with realtor as needed -make list of things I have -make list of things to get -decide which (if any) large things I'm bringing Questions: -how do I get a sense of what square-footage actually means? -is it worth moving my bicycle across the country, or should I get a new one?
i mean i dont know much about moving but id recommend keeping your bike if its a good one that you like a lot, and if you know you're gonna use it - they can be $$$, and dont take up a whole lotta space, so id say bring it
Questions: is this the USA where across the country actually is a huge deal? Is there someone who could keep a few of the Big things you would leave behind? How long do you think grad school is going to be? Are you thinking of driving over with your things or maybe mailing some? Is the weather different enough you would need to update your wardrobe? Getting a good idea of square footage might just be grabbing a tape measures and using like, objects to outline walls in the dimensions and walk around. Ask photos of the realtor. A good thing to keep in mind is having a list of things you will need to pack last so you don't accidentally pack stuff you need and have to unpack a big box.
This is the US. I don't drive, and anyway, having a car is a bad idea in the city I'll be in for grad school, so things I'd bring would need to be shipped. As far as wardrobe, yeah, there will be a very different climate, but I already have a lot of the stuff I need for that because I did half of undergrad in the same state I'm moving to. Furniture can stay out here with either my parents or boyfriend's (who I'm living with right now). The pack last list is a really useful idea, because then I can check that stuff off as I pack it, too, so I don't forget it. Thanks! Things Done -called realtor -started lists -joined FB group for queer-friendly housing in region Updated To Do List -call realtor back about scheduling (best to do this Friday 4/8) -meet with parents about dishes etc. they don't need that I can have (scheduled for Thurs 4/7) -look up shipping prices vs airline luggage prices -start packing winter things
Congrats on grad school! Airline luggage prices are pretty steep if you have more than 50lbs in a bag. Square footage feels somewhat different depending on layout: 650 square feet can be a very tidy one-bedroom with plenty of living space or a cramped nightmare. Right now my roommate and I live in an 812 square foot 2-bedroom, and have a nice large kitchen with dining area and a weird-shaped living room, and we're moving to a 951 square foot 2-bedroom with quite generous living area, more moderately sized bedrooms, and more storage. A bedroom that's 10' x 8' is pretty small, but not a claustrophobic hell unless you have a really big bed. Anything smaller probably will be, though.
