I totally recommend hitting up my friend reptiliaherps on tumblr! She's fucking great with advice and loves making sure sneky friends are well taken care of! I would recommend researching your breeder instead of just getting at a meet, its a way to ensure your friend won't have health issues later. You will need a good thermometer, humidity gauge, and heat rock. <Edit: see don't even listen to me I'm a dipshit who can't remember their own setup What kind of snake depends on space and temperment you're looking for! I would do research on what each of those kinds need. You also need to be prepared to feed your snake, and to have separate feeding areas for them. You cannot just feed your snake in their cage if you want them to be handleable. Also some of those questions are so nonspecific that answering them might be a bit hard. Brands for what? Bedding? Thermometers? Tanks?
Fuck yeah not rocks I have been all scrambled. I dont know why I said rock when I have an under the tank heater for mine?? Brain wtf are you doing today?? As long as at the swap they're breeders and you can ask around for reviews you should be fine! Also you will need to know of any vets who see snakes in your area! I would have one lined up before getting a scaley friend. Bedding I use for my snake is stuff that is no dust aspen substrate. My snake can dig in it. Also having a little log or hiding place is good. Hm, I can't remember thermometer brands off the top of my head. Reptiliaherps should have a better time with that than me. For a feeding container what I use is just a plastic bin with a lid strong enough to hold my snake while she feeds. You don't leave them in for more than an hour, so it doesn't need bedding or anything. Just wash it our after feeding! Yeah ball pythons can be picky and will refuse food. Hognoses are very cute! I like cornsnakes cuz they come in so many color varieties.
I have an california king snake! She's about five feet long now, had her for like... Four years? Five? Something like that. She used to be the size of a pencil when I got her! She's so cute! She's albino, and has the light yellow markings and red eyes. Her scales are so white they look purple cuz of her insides.
I know someone with an African House Snake (also known as a cape house snake). From what I can tell they are very docile and smol (grow a maximum of 4 ft. for females, about 2.5ft maximum for males) they just aren't as pretty as corn snakes unless you are going for a particular morph.
I was thinking of the Smooth Green Snake, a small insectivore. However, I looked them up and they don't actually make ideal pets as they don't tolerate much handling. But they are mild tempered and beautiful.
With a 50gal and a smol snake you will need lots of hiding places. My BP is in a 50 and has two, though I probably should get more because I'm dumb and bought adult sized hides, forgetting that she's a wee bab. Figure out what substrate you'll need too. Mine has repitcarpet (basically felt made out of recycled bottles) because BPs don't burrow much, and you can just pull the whole thing out, dust off the poops and soak it in dilute bleach/water while you disinfect the rest of the tank. Much cheaper than buying aspen or whatnot in the long run.
Hoggies are almost definitely burrowers. Check out scalestails on Tumblr too, they have great care sheets
I vote ball pythons or corn sneks, but that's cause that's what I worked with in my school. they were such cutes.
