I'm Curious

Discussion in 'General Chatter' started by bubblyNightmare, Oct 3, 2016.

  1. I was exploring the forums a bit and I noticed something that made me pause. I understand people generally think bad of otherkin and fictionkin but since this is a Seebs forum I thought people would at least give it a second chance. No such luck. So I'm curious. What are your opinion about otherkin and/or fictionkin?

re: otherkin & fictionkin- I've got no beef with them, I've noticed that, like most groups, the loud & angry ones are the ones most often heard, which makes me think that a large percentage of otherkin and fictionkin are just trying to duck the bad reps they get from the loud and angry ones.

Not sure what you meant by:

  3. Yeah I try to stay away from them to but the majority is very nice and just want to find their canon mates and discuss their memories and feelings with people who understand.

About that part, I just saw a bunch of people making fun of some problematic kids and it was all fun and games until they were like "hahahah and this one is fictionkin to boot! so fucking delusional" I'm paraphrasing but that was the gist of it. I just assumed that was the general sentiment of the forum, which I guess looking backwards may not be true

The topic's come up before, and we were rather widely divided then. There's a number of otherkin here, a number of people who are burned by exposure to many of the pushy crowd, and a number who think of it as a joke.

    eta

And there is a distinction to be made between otherkin and fictionkin. With as many creative sorts here as there are, some of us are personally offended by people who claim to be our (or others') creations.

The Frood Abides Doesn't Know Where His Rug Is

Yeah, there's uniformity of opinion (Kintsensus?) on some issues here: we're pretty similar to Tumblr, ranging from left to liberal... Most significant difference I can think of is that we're more skeptical/critical of the "SJ movement" than average (given how many of its more extreme manifestations fuck over transgender people/people with MIs/trauma survivors) but still generally aligned with its goals.

But then there are issues where there's no consensus at all, and the otherkin thing is one of them. Swirlingflight is right. P much every otherkin/fictionkin thread has spawned an Argument Island offshoot at some point, as far as I can tell. I have no stake in the issue so I've stayed well out of it. EDIT: Point is, whatever your stance, you'll be able to find people who agree and disagree here.

I mean... I'm coping fictionkin, meaning I just strongly relate to characters on a personal level (similar personalities, goals, motivations, etc.) so I mean obviously I don't mind them but at the same time the people that claim to be characters in another life kind of... squick me out. Otherkin/Therian I can understand, since that has heavy ties to Buddhism and I am not one to question religious beliefs or practices if they're not harming people, but not "I literally am Sailor Moon and everybody else is a fake" and stuff like that. =/

IIRC there are a few fictionkin/otherkin threads out there, and a prominent member of the forums before fae left identified as fictionkin in some instances, and there are other people who identify as various things on that spectrum.

Yeah there are also people who mock it at times, but often that's in the context of someone like Ray.

and like... there's the question of friendly fire, if we mock people we DISlike for a thing that we wouldn't mock in people we like.

which is part of why my emphasis is in the manner / conduct of it. ray's an asshole who uses his identity as an excuse to attack people. the kin i've seen here, it's just part of their identity, and more often a source of happy things (look at all these adorable cuttlefish pictures omg) than unkindness.

    Boots Cats. Boots. Cats. bootsandcatsandbootsand...

dumb question....? But what on earth is a fictionkin? I've stumbled across otherkin before (my general opinion is "it's fucking weird, but it's not my place to judge, so whatever floats your goat) but I've never even heard of the other one. Context clues tell me it's a person who....identifies as a fictional character? But???? how do?

BlackholeKG I saw you making fire

Somebody should probably dredge up that fictionkin discourse thread that was in Top Serket for contextual reading, here.

tl;dr, though: I think people here generally do give fictionkin a "second look/chance"! There are a number of prominent fictionkin here. It's just that some people, particular anti types discussed tumblr.txt/kids on tumblr threads etc, sometimes execute their kin-ness in manners that are sorta... Well, Not Good for various reasons. In those cases there are some negative thoughts directed at them but it's generally because of something that they're doing rather than judgements of the entire kin community. There's been a lot of discussion about all this here before, but like I'd say I'd rather no get too far into it myself at the moment, aha
