a thread for everyone's favorite musical that really i swear it does have a plot i promise

have you seen live productions, or only the movie? or vice versa? do you have a preference or are both great? who's your favorite?

and, my personal favorite: how do you take a musical about talking cats and inject frankly ridiculous amounts of drama, conflict, and dubiously-there plot?

YELLS i loved this musical so much as a kid........ i used to watch it on repeat every day

i own like an official book(s?) with photos of the musical and the original book of poems and i saw it live and i dressed up like one of the cats for halloween

I have the VHS movie production which I watched all the time growing up and I saw it live on tour once. From 14 to 17, I lived for CATS. I drew them, I wrote fanfiction, I was part of an RP board, I had a million CATS OCs. The only thing I didn't do was make my own costume because I couldn't sew, but I had friends who made almost perfect replicas.

Munkustrap was my favorite for a long time but then I became fascinated by Macavity like the fucking edgelord I was.

I first heard the musical over at my bestie's house when I was like... somewhere in the 6-10 range, and I was CAPTIVATED FOREVER. I was too poor to get the 2-CD copy of the soundtrack, so I taped a broadcast of it off of TV amidst family drama because screw yelling I need those dancing cats. I really wanted one of the costumes and honestly, to this day, it's probably the type of fursuit I'd go to, I love those designs so much.

My favourites were Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer, though I also loved Mr. Mistoffelees and Skimbleshanks. And Grizabella!! CAN'T FORGET GRIZABELLA.

I'm pretty sure I was part of RP boards when I was a kid, so I probably had a bunch of OCs, though for the life of me I can't find any evidence of them now.

i did RP cats but that was mostly on FFnet and dA, haha! i don't recall any OCs but i did make "CATS" versions of my housecats :p

 

My CATS days were back in the mid-90s, on a forum! That's how I learned about RP.

I had a witchy cat OC named Alucard (yes, like the vampire) and a handsome shopkeeper cat named...Maximillion Pennywise! All the lady cats wanted some of that shit.

....in retrospect, it seems obvious now that I dabbled in furrydom for awhile in college.

I mean I'm pretty sure the forums I was on are all gone by now, but yeah! We had a board for RPing as the characters, we had one for RPing as OCs going to the Jellicle Ball, there was even one for RPing dancers/singers auditioning and performing in the musical.

My favorite was an AU that was like a West Side Story sort of deal. I played Macavity as a greaser gangster dude + organized crime boss in the 50s. But, like, as an anthro cat. He was in an on again, off again relationship with Bombalurina and it was all very angsty.

 

oooh, there was a really popular fic kind of like that, i wonder if the rp boards're where they got the idea?

i haven't been in fandom since i was an edgy teen, so what i remember liking is definitely OW the EDGE in some regards, but i did like the AUs where macavity was a crime boss but an anthro cat. especially the ones that ended up with some cool interaction that wouldn't have been seen much before, like misto hanging out with/being friends with mungojerrie and rumpleteazer!

also, man, i'm remembering how much i missed RPing cats, wtf ;-;

 

I had a taped-off-PBS version that I watched a lot. I was maybe 8 or 7 when I first watched it, so we didn't have the internet at that point, but one of my friends and I played CATS all the time. I also still sing snippets of a bunch of the songs, though I don't know them as well as the JC Superstar ones. (somehow most the music I listened to as a kid was Andrew Lloyd Webber)

I recently redescovered this is one of my Things so yes helo
Me and @cassikat had the vhs but watched it to the point it had a glitch and would distort the screen

I had one OC who was basically a self insert bc I felt bad that I 'couldnt be activive in fandom bc I suck' nonesense who is now dead and will never be brought to life again. My fave is misto now but it used to be alonzo bc I thought he was Fine Shit. This movie is why im a furry and im currently attemting to revive it with art and fics
