My time working as customer service for a phone company finally pays off. To keep your number you need to talk to your current provider tell them to release you number, they'll work with new provider to transfer it. There is no reason i can thibk of that the number would be unable to transfer. The quicker you want to get onto the new provider's service the quicker I would start this process. And yes, you'll need to cancel your current plan, you can go into a store or call into customer service, they will try to offer you goodies to stay but if you want to leave just be firm. When you cancel your phone they will cancel any contract/finance plan your phone may have been on and ask you to pay any remaining amount/any cancellation fee they may have.

You will need to cancel your plan and unlock the phone before the phone can work on another service's network. Basically if you are no longer in contract or if the phone is paid off, your phone can now be unlocked! Customer service can also help you unlock your phone. They'll run you though an online form you need to file with your provider, this usually takes a few days to process. Then you enter the code they send you into the phone unlock screen, most phones have a little icons in their apps now that say unlock to make it easier.

I think I covered everything, but let me know if you are still confused or have any questions.

My phone's already unlocked, I'm not with a contracted company, but thank you! :) I just spoke to them and they said the new company only needs the number (obviously) and my account number with my current one, and they'll handle everything else, and the service will automatically cancel and everything like that. But again, thank you!

    I will, thank you! :D

Just one more quick question to confirm - The company I'm switching to is pay what you use. So if I limited myself to say, 2GB of data, and only use 1GB, I should only have to pay $10 instead of the $20 2GB would usually be?

If its pay what you use that should be the case, unless they have some other pricing for 1GB. You may want to confirm with your new provider tho cuz somtimes phone companies are tricky.

1GB is actually $16 ooops. from the looks of their rates page, it seems the tool is for playing around. it does say every bill is different

Yeah, I figured that might be the case. I'm not sure how often you use your data but I find I usually use about 2GB in a month, so the 2GB price is better if you use that much.
