I wanted to try a liveblogging, so I decided this would be a good choice. It was brought up in the Twin Peaks thread, so I'm making a spoiler-free new thread for this. That way, fans of the show can discuss it freely without having to spoiler everything, and I won't have to fret over spoiling other people by forgetting to do that myself. I'm also posting this on my tumblr, mostly so I can link back to the photos from there. I don't expect traffic, but at least it gets me writing again, so that's a bonus.
The music is really relaxing, but in an off way. I feel like I’m watching an Adult Swim bumper at points, and expect a deep voice man to start speaking and making vaguely threatening tangents. I mean, as far as I understand the show that’s not too far off than the expected, but it’s still creeptastic to deal with upon opening. Also, mostly showing this one off because I was surprised on my first watching that Lara Flynn Boyle was on this show. I can’t really place who she is though, since I am bad at remembering her face, so expect me to be a dumbass and totally miss her when she comes back on screen. Just c/ping the commentary I had already added to this image. Mostly because it's taking a while to go from post to forum, and then back to the show, and I want to listen to more of the song. It's creepy-nice, like a nest of baby spiders.
We haven’t got her name yet, nor do I remember it from the first time I tried watching the show about a year ago, but there’s got to be something important about starting the show with her. This is the first character we’ve seen, and while she’s a fairly sympathetic side character (I know we see more of her in this episode, at least), it’s not like starting with Agent Coop or Laura Palmer. Whoever she is or her importance, she does a hell of a winged eyeliner.
Jesus. This is our first shot, and it’s a pretty far distance from the actual corpse to start off with. She’s barely obfuscated behind a large dead tree, and within walking distance of this guy’s front door, where two or possibly three people live. Someone wanted this body to be found, and found quick.
Hey there Laura. Looks like you had a pretty bad day, yesterday. Today is not going to look up any better. I already know who this is, partly from seeing the first few episodes a year ago and partly from cultural osmosis, but it’s still unnerving to get our first view of Laura Palmer here. There’s many pictures of her later, where she is beautiful, well-dressed and happy. The theme has not kicked up yet. But it’s not time for her song, is it?
It lingers a long time on Sheriff Harry as he’s getting his coat, telling Lucy to keep things under wraps, and driving away, even a lingering few seconds on the police station itself as they drive away. I feel like I’m invading on this investigation. I don’t mind that as much, it’s a nice change of pace of how lurid other procedurals can be, pulling away from the ugly and slow parts and just filling every word with quippy dialogue or attractive people dangling all over like eye candy. This is a private crime and private tragedy, but it’s all there for the viewer to spy on.
I'm taking a bit to post most of these on my actual tumblr. After I get the episode done, I'll summarize it here and post the better parts of analysis. All I have right now is guesses and chaff, and it's taking forever to actually watch the episode if I stop every few minutes to screen cap and post it on two websites, unfortunately. I can see why it takes Loreweaver 3 hours to get through a Steven Universe episode, jeez louise.
