I'm dancing in the Christmas show my burlesque group does, but I HATE both mainstream music and Christmas music and especially the conjunction of the two, so I need to come up with a list of as much off-the-wall Christmas and general wintry music as I can possibly find so I can pick something. Anything religious or overly sad is inappropriate, I don't think heavy metal would work, I refuse to do anything light and tinkly, and something with lyrics will be much easier to keep track of where I am in the routine. Anyone know anything in the dark cabaret genre? So far I have Steeleye Span's Wintersmith album, the nonspecific-holiday songs from Alexander James Adams' Wintertide album, and I debated and rejected the overly political "You Don't Deserve A Goddamn Thing For Christmas". Someone else is already doing "Fairytale of New York" and you can't really do that with only one person. I could do "Blue Christmas" in a pinch.
Jethro Tull's "Jack Frost and the Hoodie Crow" might be overly sad/dark, but it's pretty much my go-to for "modern christmas music that doesn't suck". Maybe Steeleye Span's "The King" or "Gower Wassail" ?
