So. Was in the ER for what ended up getting diagnosed as pancreatitis. Hurt lots at the time, hurts less now. Been consuming mostly apple juice and Sprite mixed, have been p disinterested in food. Mom has been super-supportive. Which is great. What's slightly less great is she has trouble taking "Please stop talking about food, it makes me feel sick" and turning it into an actionable statement. And she really, really wants to make me "nourishing food" and keeps asking what I want, looking up "pancreatitis" on her health sites and telling me about food suggestions she finds there, asking me if I've done the research and decided on a food plan yet... and no, I haven't looked hard, because I've had two medical professionals and my own innards tell me the answer is "Very little," and I don't actually care how healthy onions really are, I don't especially want sweet potatos and am not likely to make any appreciable dent in a quartered whole chicken so unless you were intending to eat most of that bird carcass yourself... god, you're being so nice but I DON'T WANT FOOD aaaaugh. I haven't liked talking to her about food for years, she gets so manic about it and everything surrounding it is so loaded on so many levels. The smell of dinner was delicious and made me want to puke at the same time. So. Ok. Uh. This has descended into useless bitching, since I'm unlikely to get advice on the "How to talk about food to Mom" front that I haven't either already taken or know won't work... anyone know anything about pancreas food? Or like, non-food? I've been happy with dry toast and AJ but I need to throw my mom a bone.
Oh man, that sucks, vegacoyote. I hope you get well soon :) Unfortunately I have no food suggestions, just sympathy.
So I know your mom probably searched the same thing I did, but instead of suggesting something for you, I'll just throw up this copied list I found, take it or leave it whatever Fish (white meat fish such as cod, halibut, bass, crappie, pollack, orange roughy, talapia, catfish) Seafood (lobster, shrimp, crab, scallops, clams etc) Poultry (skinless chicken, turkey, grouse, pheasant, quail) Egg whites (4 grams of protein per egg white, ZERO fat) Legumes (beans, lentils, peas) Vegetables (all kinds – leafy greens, tubers and cruciferous) Fruits (all kinds EXCEPT avocado and coconut) Whole grains (wheat, barley, oats, rice etc) Spices (especially good are cayenne, garlic, turmeric, black pepper, ginger because all are anti-inflammatory) *shrug* comfort sent your way through internet
Enlist nurse or doctor to "restrict" your diet to her. Basically it looks like you should have no fats Mom wants to be helpful but doesn't know how. Giving her an incredibly strict diet to work on will make her feel even better as she works hard to be helpful. Plus, you will eventually want/need food so you can leverage HER anxiety to YOUR benefit by getting her to make ALL THE FOOD.
