Ask for the kind of music recommendations here that Spotify or YouTube just can't give. I think that we have a pretty broad and varied musical taste as a bunch of people, and I think that we can help each other find new music that fits the kind of themes/feelings/moods we're looking for! Feel free to be as narrow or broad as you like (although I'd like this thread to be a little more specific than "I just want some new songs to listen to").
apologies if too specific, but i’m looking for songs that maybe were intended as halloween songs, and/or have halloween-y supernatural themes, but aren’t “monster mash” or “ghostbusters” or “werewolves of london” levels of silly/corny (i love those songs! but they are corny). stuff that could pass for a spooky year-round playlist! examples of the kind of thing i mean:
What are your feelings on Neil Cicierega's Spirit Phone album? I know some is maybe a bit corny, but it's the first thing I could think of.
oh that's such a good prompt! some recs: More high tempo, synth-y stuff (sort of like the last song you linked) Heads Will Roll (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) Tigerlily (LaRoux) Severed (The Decemberists) There's also the whole genre of Decemberists songs about ghosts, monsters and/or murder, like Rusalka, Rusalka/Wild Rushes, Shankill Butchers, Eli the Barrow Boy, For My Own True Love (Lost At Sea), Leslie Anne Levine, The Hazards of Love 3 (Revenge!), and the beginning of the Tain. Some more atmospheric, almost dirge-y stuff Night Time, My Time (Sky Ferreira) Mothercreep (FKA twigs) Rabbit Heart (Florence + The Machine) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF6kBNLTvaU Arienette (Bright Eyes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcB1IRr5wpI And finally, some stuff that's a bit more...literal? I suppose Spellbound (Siouxsie and the Banshees) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjvvK-Rj0WI I put a spell on you (Nina Simone) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua2k52n_Bvw Secret (The Pierces) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzNFwxsSPwU Their whole first album has something of a similar vibe, actually hope some of that appeals?
i know a genuinely creepy monster-y song, but it's hardcore industrial so i'm not sure how much you'd like it
This is a fun prompt. ilyAIMY - In The Water The ghost of a murdered child whose body washed into a lake sings to her parents about the mud and the minnows. Creepy as heck, mostly due to haunting vocals, though there are some excellent lines too. More creepy-sad than scary, so might not be what you're looking for, but I like it so much I wanted to include it just in case. Acoustic/folky. No graphic details about the murder. Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting About vampires in New Orleans; inspired by Anne Rice books. Slightly less corny than Monster Mash, but only very slightly. A lot of fun. The extended version has thunderstorm noises and church bells in it and just goes all out. The lyrics are somewhat incoherent; it's not clear if it's about being a vampire or being in love with a vampire. Not the sort of song where those detail matter. High energy, says "oh yeah" a lot, fuzzed electric guitars.
thank you all for the recs!!! i haven’t had time to give everything a listen but a lot of these are exactly the kind of thing i’m looking for >:D
Does anyone have recs for platonic breakup songs? For a friendship, family relationship, whatever, as long as it’s not explicitly romantic. (and really I’m always in the market for good non-romantic relationship songs, whether they’re about breakups or no)
I have a few! Mal Blum, "New Year's Eve" This one is...maybe a bit about a romantic relationship? But mostly a friend one. Mal Blum (again), "My Name is Earthworm" Also Mal Blum, "Hypocrite!" but I couldn't find that on youtube. The Mountain Goats, "Distant Stations" The Mountain Goats, "Sometimes I Still Feel the Bruise" I think "Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds" also has that vibe?
https://soundcloud.com/lotusjuice/relative relative by lotus juice is also p good, but i'm not sure whether it is a breakup song of some kind or it's referring to someone who died
