No, no, no. You do the proof to determine whether or not it's a good idea to do the experiment. (And then half the time you do it anyway, but never mind that.) You always do the proof. It's when you don't do the proof and do the experiment that you really fuck everything up. At least if you do the proof, you already know going in that it's a bad idea and what to look out for! (Also, do not take scientific advice from demons.)
