So My Cat Got Hurt Pretty Badly

So, my cat got hurt. We're not sure how, but there was a big tear in her belly, and she has a broken leg. My brother saw her as he was leaving and called my da over, all concerned. We got her inside and wrapped her in a warm towel and attempted to get ahold of the vet.
To be honest, it kind of made me sick. I felt all hot and dizzy and nauseated. It felt dumb being in shock when it wasn't even me that was hurt.
Well. It's Memorial Weekend, there's only two vets in the area. We left a message with the first vet and he called us back almost immediately, but all he said was to give her a baby aspirin and put antibiotic ointment on the wound, that he couldn't see her for the next few days. So we followed his instructions, but called the other vet. Meanwhile my cat is sitting there just crying, she doesn't feel good, at all. She's usually pretty stoic, so you know the pain has got to be pretty unbearable. Well, we get ahold of this vet, and he says he can see her tonight, but he's closer to his practice in the other county. So we packed her up, and drive 45 minutes south, and he opens up his clinic just to see us.
She was actually really good for the car ride, she usually hates the car. I don't know if the aspirin kicked in or what, but she only cried when the road got really bumpy where it's been patched badly.
Well we got there, and he looks at her, tells us we can either leave her there and pick her up on Wednesday or he can patch her up right then, it'll probably take an hour and a half. We figure, what the heck, we'll sit and worry otherwise, so we wait and he gives her a shot of anesthetic and hauls her back and stitches and cleans her up.
There are a couple cats that live at the clinic, a cream coloured longhair that's had a haircut, and a three legged grey striped tabby. The cream coloured cat is very friendly, and kept me company while I waited, while the three legged one was entertaining to watch- it was chasing flies, or something. It'd go running from room to room, kind of haphazardly and noisily.
Finally the vet calls me in to assist while he put the splint on my cat's leg. He tells me that there's muscle tearing in her belly, but no internal damage. He put in a drain and gave her an antibiotic shot. We can have the drain removed in about 4 days, the stitches taken out in 3 weeks, and the cast removed in a month and a half.
Anyway, we're home now. My baby's still asleep from the anesthetic. Her nose is all dried out so I put a dab of chapstick on it.

We're not sure. We wonder if she cut herself on a wire fence and then fell, or if a dog got her?
She's still pretty miserable. She's woken up enough to realize that there is a Thing on her arm and she Does Not Like it. She actually hurt herself a bit trying to get it off, so she has a big scratch on her armpit now from her back claws. She can't walk, from a combination of the ripped tummy muscles and the broken leg, and possibly being drugged up, so she's been rolling around this morning.
She hasn't been able to make it over to her food and water dishes, so I've been giving her water with a syringe. She's not particularly impressed.
Also, she hasn't been able to move to the litterbox, so I've had to change her bedding a few times.
Her pride is injured as well as her body, I'm afraid.

Yeah. Knowing cats, I think her pride may be hurt worse than her body :P

Oh man, poor miserable kitty. Would clipping her claws to keep her from scratching stress her out too much? I know extra stress is almost the last thing she need, but man... more injuries isn't fun. Also, maybe if her food and water were in little bowls near her bedding she could just... lean her head over and chomp them. Maybe that'll feel a bit more dignified.

One can also mix a little wet cat food with water and feed it via syringe.

When I was cleaning her this morning with a damp cloth, it looked like maybe where I thought she'd scratched herself was maybe obtained at the same time as her other injuries. There's a small hole in her that looks kind of like the others.
Mixing wet food with the water in the syringe might be a good idea. She still hasn't eaten anything. I kind of want to get a better syringe though. The turkey baster syringe doesn't have a very smooth plunge mechanism, so it's kind of hard to control while using. IFA should have feeder syringes, but it's closed for memorial day.
Her food bowl and water fountain are in the bathroom where she's recovering, but not near her bed. I'm kind of afraid of her rolling into the fountain and getting wet, which the vet really stressed not to get her cast wet at all.

sounds like maybe she got attacked by a coyote. might be good to be careful about letting critters outdoors for a while.

Yeah, indoor is the best way to keep cats safe. But I am biased, I am a big advocate for indoor only cats. (lots of reasons why buy won't clog up your thread)

Kitty really took a number though, I am so glad you guys got her help quickly. I really hope she heals up soon.

So my da put down plastic and some towels on the bed, so we're chilling here together without fear of her leaking all over the place. She still hasn't been eating on her own, but we've gotten a bit of food down her today. Also she's been a little more mobile today, walking short distances. She gets tired though, and just kind of flops over. Also she's really stinky. Feeding her is kind of a mess, and then she's got the drain that drains blood and such onto her belly, and then she's not really been able to get up to go to the bathroom, so she has a bit of pee smell on her too. She's not feeling well enough to groom herself, so I've been wiping her down with a damp cloth a few times a day, but she fights me on that, so... smelly cat.
