so, i've just watched the entire first season of 2016 voltron, and felt like making a thread on it. pidge is my fave (and i have a spoilery headcanon about him, which i've mentioned before in fan town). and i ship lance <3< keith. and @MagicalBoy, i think you mentioned interest in a voltron thread.
yeye, love Shay! never seen flat chested buff lady alien in a kid's show before! Like her lots. She and Hunk oughta smooch.
AU where bonding with the lions is a much more invasive and kinda shitty process for the paladins, ala "the lions have needs regarding their hosts and if you do not fit they wilk goddamned make you". A buncha kids got picked cause they recover easier or something. Sorta a play on the "you were chosen to be a hero!" deal, where yeah, you were chosen, but it didn't need to be you, and it kinda isn't. also, glowy lion hybrid cyborgs, cause I'm basic ad I dig that shit.
@prismaticvoid @Another Shy One I FOUND THE VOLTRON THREAD HOO BOI I just started watching this show and made it to episode.... 8? I think? I watched it all today everything is a blur. I fuckin love pidge and hunk... so much.... And Shay!! Beautiful kind alien lady! And Shiro! Actually i love all of them and i just want to talk about them a lot one sec Spoiler: HEADcANON TIME (because i have no self control) OK The first 5 seconds of the first episode i was like "pidge is fucking trans" but in light of recent events i would like to reconsider that statement and propose instead: Pidge is fuckin nonbinary. Also I love that she's so so smart but when things don't work out she's just like "ok time 2 stab shit" I like the idea of ace Hunk a lot! Also, I want to know more about his backstory, because the more you consider it the sadder it gets. Like, ok haha the fat guy is obsessed with food, been there done that. Then there's the whole thing where he hates tension in the group, he's anxious and cowardly (especially in the first couple of eps, he seems to get a lot more confident later on), but he doesn't seem to find anything wrong with snooping through or stealing people's personal property? To me this is all pointing to childhood food insecurity and poverty, among other stuff probably. petition to get a Hunk backstory episode. And don't even get me started on Shiro. This guy. I just wanna give him a hug. I mean, he went from being a captive gladiator on an alien ship to crash-landing on Earth to being in charge of a bunch of teenagers he didn't even know, THEN getting dragged through a wormhole in a giant robotic lion ffs and finally landing on an alien planet. Someone please give this poor man a break. I like how the show lets bits of his trauma slip in without ever making him seem weak. (the bit where they first began training with that... whatever it was, the robo-thing in the castle, and he had a flashback of being attacked when he was a prisoner--that was when i went "yup this one is mine now"). Also, any ideas for how old he is? I was thinking late 20s or early 30s, but i have no idea.
My emotions whenever Shiro gets fucked up physically/emotionally are evenly split between "agh no" and "yes good"
@prismaticvoid HONESTLY THO?? I love watching my favs suffer but at the same time i just want to protect them and its such a paradox. In the episode where the Galra infiltrate the castle and Sendak used Shiro as bait to get Pidge to turn herself (himself? themself?) in, you could just tell that Shiro would gladly take whatever torture they threw at him to keep the rest of them safe and my heart hurt. Space Dad no... And pretty much the entire gladiator episode with Shiro's past being revealed just... completely slaughtered me emotionally.
@unknownanonymous Yeah! Theres a theory (supported by considerable amounts of canon evidence) that Keith is either a Galra or half-Galra (im personally partial to the half-Galra one). 1) In the ep "Return to the Balmera", Keith was able to close the bay doors in the tunnels to trap the Galran troops inside by simply putting his hand on the control panel, something that was previously shown to only work when the Galran guards did it, or when they used the severed hand of a Galran droid. 2) In "Collection and Extraction", Keith is splashed by some of the quintessence stuff. His skin turns purple where the stuff hit, but fades soon afterward 3) In the season finale, Zarkon remarks very pointedly that Keith "Fights like a Galra" This also ties into the theory that 3G (Good Guy Galra, who disabled the barrier to let them escape in the finale) is either Keith's dad, or knows Keith/his family, because that was more than just benevolence, he probably wouldn't sabatoge a huge mission like that just out of the goodness of his heart. 3G was trying to protect someone or something. [Side eye emojis] I hope he gets some more screentime in the next season
i am only on episode one so i squint-scrolled, but: UH YOU GUYS THERE WERE PRISONERS ON THAT SHIP YOU JUST ASPLODED...... I MEAN GOOD JOB FORMING VOLTRON BUT.... IM PRETTY SURE THERE WERE PRISONERS,,,,,
Yeah this show as a LOT of collateral damage stuff, and I'm wondering if they're ever going to get into that because there is no way with a galactic empire as big as the Galra's that they won't end up at some point fucking up PoWs, non-combatants, and generally making a mess of innocent people's lives.
Huh so this (SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE SEASON) made me wonder... is Keith actually that much of a lone wolf type? Like, maybe it's my terrible memory, but I don't really remember his ever acting like he didn't need the others, could do everything himself... I mean, he was the one telling Pidge to absolutely stay on the team and who was most angry at the possibility of them breaking up, right? And yeah he was out in the middle of nowhere and Spoiler: spoiler for finale went after Zarkon alone in that one fight but I thought of those as being more for necessity's sake/sheer anger than anything else, not because he didn't think he needed other people around. Am I just misremembering?
Spoiler: More finale talk He went after Zarkon to help Shiro and black though, so it's not like he was acting as a lone wolf out glory seeking, he was definitely doing it to help his team mate even though he got caught up in the fight. His shtick is he's an impulsive hot head. That gets him in trouble re: the standard military structure of discipline and order, but he isn't a loner. I think LANCE is the one more likely to fall into the Lone Wolf trope, but he's more talk than action, because when shit hits the fan he clings like a statically charged balloon. Wait no, Pidge is definitely the team Lone Wolf. The amount of times that kid has either actually gone off alone or talked about it fits.
Also, thoughts re: Pidge's "secret" Spoiler: the seeeeeecret Pidge does not act like "A girl pretending to be a boy," she acts like someone who is more comfortable as a boy and hasn't yet figured out the significance. Everyone still refers to her as Pidge instead of Katie and she doesn't show any discomfort, she still wears the same clothes the same way, and her mannerisms while still under the guise of a boy didn't seem forced or counter to what she's used to. Even coming clean seemed more a matter of "I am lying by omission which makes me feel bad," and less discomfort with being misgendered which is... okay I might be projecting on that one, but it's definitely something that I used to do before I reached conclusions about my own gender. I'm really torn about head canons that she's trans though, because on the one hand do want, but on the other, the creator's choice to make Pidge a girl in this version was to try and help balance out the sausage fest that was the original Voltron show, and also to highlight the fact that having a girl on your team doesn't have to change the fucking dynamic at all. Which I also want! So I'm now in a position where I'm being forced to choose between my trans representation and my female representation, and I don't like it >:I ... Obvs the solution is one of the guys has to be a trans woman.
I vote transdude Lance, on acounta he was the only one who didn't get that Pidge was a girl, and I choose to believe that what he missed wasn't that she was female, but that she's a she. Or a maybe she. I dunno. Anyways, I just want one of those, "oh, we all knew yu were just pretending to be x gender, except this guy who is totally taken aback" to end with someone else being all "Wait, I thought you were playing for my team?"
Spoiler: Pidge spoilers My personal headcanon is that Pidge is a trans girl, but a not-very-feminine one, and the feminine clothing and hair on the photo and one flashback were to make her family/society take her gender seriously. In their accepting team environment she can be the butch girl she really wants to be, without compromising either aspect. ...but that's not so much my "read" on Pidge so much as what I really want for representation reasons.
I also vote Lance. He leans so hard on the traditionally masculine tropes that it would make total sense for that to be part of some serious over compensation. Edit: but for some reason the first one that came to mind was Keith? I can't peg why at all though.
Okay, someone on 4chan referred to Keith as "the mildly autistic one" (there was confusion as to which character was which) and, oh god, I can see it.
