I can't think of a creative subtitle P: Continuing a brief discussion in tumblr.txt re: bitterness at this game's protag being in a list of "cookie cutter white stubbly male hero protags" or whatever that was.

    From the website:

Basically, this is the best, story driven shooter I have ever played, and I think every steam review that says the game plays you is accurate and oh my god please talk to me about it

To be fair, he does look like them at the start of the game. Which is very intentional choice. And it was about looks, not personalities. But yeah, that's like having a montage of cute magical girl animal sidekicks and having Kyubei in it. Or Generic Tough Guy Mercenary Heroes with Cloud Strife in it.

I watched a lets play of it a couple years ago and yeah wow, i got Hella Spooked by the

    white phosphorus part???
and probably won't ever play it myself

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

The *second or third* best psychological mind-punch I've ever played. (Cry of Fear's twist got me a bit harder, because I saw the ending of Spec Ops coming, and Shattered Memories was more *aesthetic* overall.) But still one of the most memorable experiences of my gaming career. Easily a 95/100.

I think I have already been spoiled for this game, but not spoiled enough that I'm willing to open any of the spoiler cuts :P

I wanna watch it but none of the Let's Players I follow seem to have played it. Good Let's Play rec?

A Let's Play wouldn't be the same as playing it, I don't think. Some of the emotional impact lies in *you the player* making certain decisions.

I know enough about it to know the protagonist/the player is gonna end up having to make some really shit choices (though I don't quite know the extent of it. I'm assuming lots of innocent people dead though)
I'm at home over the holidays, my laptop here probably isn't good enough to run it, and when I'm back to school I'll probably be too busy. (not even just with school, i have so many games i haven't finished yet.) Me playing it isn't particularly likely to happen, unfortunately.

A no-commentary LP would probably be the best. I don't think the game branches at any points aside from the end-game choice, so I think either way you'll get the same experience. But a lot of the choices you are forced to make may have you screaming at the LPer :P

I know there's some points where there are several different things you can do that the game allows for (e.g. a situation where you're told to shoot one of two people and you can shoot one, both, the ropes holding them up, or the snipers aiming at you to get you to do the thing) and there are multiple endings. But the main choice is "keep playing the game."

Does your choice in that part determine your ending or any other major story event that happens though?
major being like Lugo's death/Walker blaming himself for it or the entire team fighting amongst themselves

I don't think so. I have no idea how the endings work. I just know the game does often allow a lot of different ways to try to handle individual situations, even when they look like you only have one or two choices.

Ah, that's a shame. Well, then a no-comment LP is probably your best bet. I have no idea where you'd find a good one though!

Apparently there are four endings, I only played through two so I have no idea how to get the other two :P

The endings are based entirely on your choices right there.
    you can:
Shoot Konrad, enabling three endings (get rescued, go down fighting the rescue squad, or somehow survive the fight and walk off into the ruins of Dubai, which is unlikely because they're the hardest opponents in the game, you have no backup, and I don't remember if your health recovers)
Shoot your reflection, or wait for Konrad to shoot you, both of which will kill you there.

spec ops: the line was a great game. i played through the game in two sittings

in the first sitting, i played up to the
    white phosphorus part
    and then threw up

and in the second sitting, i played through the rest of the game, and vomited again after the end

I'mma do it. (Also now that you mention it I remember the go down swinging option, I just personally never did it.)

I wonder which ending is supposed to be the ""true"" ending now...

  17. Southe-lands

Southe-lands A Cliff in Front, a Wolf Behind.

I managed to pull it off. The last line of the game is chilling in that ending.

And since there's no sequel planned... probably no ending is canon?

i get the impression from the game that it really doesn't matter which ending you choose, it makes very little difference in the long run whether
you live or die, or where you go on from there

I watched an LP of it, and it seemed like a loud and bloody and shooty game that is entirely not the sort of thing I like. The message would be sort of wasted on me.

And yes, the game doesn't give you alternate options, because no other military-themed realistic cover shooter ever gives you alternate options. But did you ever *ask* for alternate options when a game said "good job" and patted you on the back for succesfully killing all the Bad Dudes? Why do you only want them now, when the game is refusing to validate you? Isn't that kind of messed up?

Of course, for me the game would ask "why did you go ahead and shoot all those dudes?" and I'd say "because I heard you had something interesting to say about it, it was scary and unpleasant and I really wish I hadn't done it" and the game would be like "wow, here you are being disappointed that going through a whole bunch of realisticly depicted mass murder brought you nothing but suffering and PTSD instead of a big celebration and Everyone Getting Saved. don't you think this whole genre is kind of messed up?" and I'd be like "I don't even go here".
