Thread for Namco's Tales series :D I'm gonna say Zestiria stuff probably needs a spoiler cut by default. I'm kind of trying to stay blind until Sept but man, it is hard to resist the temptation. I've already been accidentally spoiled for a few things...
Zestiria wank is a monster of a thing though. I mean I'm probably going to play it, but I'm also going to be mad the whole time. Gotta get Xillia 2 first though, I'm behind.
I avoid a lot of the fandom because tumblr is tumblr so...yeah. I probably said this before, but Xillia 2 is...I mean I love it, but also WHAT THE FUCK, NAMCO. It's very YMMV.
Oh I know. Nothing could compare to abyss in my heart anyway. Mostly I need to play Xillia 2 because I want to make more jokes about how it and FF13-2 are actually the same game. And our tumblr fandom on the abyss end is mostly pretty good, honestly, there's not even that much ship wank which is a miracle to me. I originally hail from kingdom hearts fandom and. Yeah. Kh fandom.
I played and loved Symphonia at the behest of a friend. I got Abyss recently and started it but my progress is on hold because I want to strangle the main character every time he speaks. Please tell me he gets better. No spoilers, just lemme know if he stops being such a dumbshit sometime soon. I really should play the others now that I might be able to get my hands on them.
Depends on how you'd view soon, but yes, Luke gets a lot better and is in fact the best protagonist ever, of all time. (I'm biased but I do love him a lot. His arc is super relevant to this forum too tbh, if either dumb redhead was real I'd drag them here bodily.) That reaction to Luke is pretty much universal though. I nearly die from the combination of annoyance and secondhand embarrassment every time I play through that part of the game again.
Oh man, I know v little about 13-2 but from what I do know, I'm not surprised. And yeah, Luke's character development is a huge part of the game. I'd say every party member gets really good character development but he's definitely the most dramatic one. I kinda love how dysfunctional Abyss's party is starting out now...
@Starcrossedsky I think you might appreciate this in light of earlier comment: http://mimiblargh.tumblr.com/post/120633363180/hello-it-is-i-the-crossover-lord-the-last-two-are
I've actually seen someone try to claim that Symphonia was an FFX ripoff. Which is...hilarious, but the two do have a lot of similarities. The whole Crystal Dragon Jesus thing.
It's not JUST the crystal dragon jesus thing. -> Protagonist is a teenage dude, but he's more of a perspective character -> The plot instead revolves around a female character -> Who is a religious figure -> Who will sacrifice herself to save the world, and doesn't want Viewpoint Dude to know -> She gathers around her a troupe of guardians, and They All Know the Sacrifice Thing -> Viewpoint Dude finds the sacrifice unacceptable, and you have to find a way around it by Breaking the Standard Pilgrimmage -> Viewpoint Dude's Dad is the most sympathetic antagonistic figure -> You spend a significant portion of the game playing Gotta Catch Them All with summons -> The religion is actually centered around a fake god to enable the Ultimate Villain's Plans -> There's a love-it-or-hate-it sequel with a much more limited party of permanent members -> That involves pursuing the Firstgame Protag/Viewpoint Dude's double at some point in the plot
Yeah, I was not really writing an exhaustive list, but you did it for me anyway :D I think Yuna and Colette's arcs are different, though, in the sense that Yuna had more agency to begin with and Colette's was about finding hers. They would be epic friends, though.
Yuna's kind of a weird case. Like, yeah, she has more agency than Colette, but at the same time, she comes off as never having really looked at options other than Being a Summoner? Like I think the fact that her father defeated Sin kind of put her on that path without letting her explore any others, just through the pressure of expectations. Compare it to how she is in X-2; she's so much happier there, IMO, even though she's coping with a loss that I thik has more impact on her as an adult than the loss of her father does. In FFX, Yevon and her duty are calling the shots until she goes off the rails; in X2, there Are No Rails. But this is the Tales thread, so let's talk about Tales. Which, lmao, Symphonia is one of my weak suits among the new and middle aged Tales games, so. I can talk for a week straight about Abyss but make me talk about Symphonia and I just flail a bit.
Symphonia was my very first Tales game, so it has a special place in my heart. Also, NEW TALES GAME HAS FEMALE PROTAG, THIS IS NOT A DRILL :DDDDDD
Yeah but OH MY GOD, HER OUTFIT. Also Nai Makes Angry Sounds about how Tales has not enough variation in settings, but.
Yeah, her outfit...I wonder about Inomata sometimes... I haven't heard anything about the setting, though.
I haven't heard anything about the setting but I'm not exactly hopeful. Since. Tales has never had the variation in the first place. where's my cyberpunk tales
Xillia 2 had the most variation, I guess, but even then, I don't think it entirely counts because it's just playing into the "fantasy world opposite magic tech world" thing most of the games have had. Graces did it in a really interesting way imho Spoiler: spoilers where Fantasy Land is actually Terraformed Colony Moon of Sci Fi Planet but at the same time I feel like they could have explored it way more. Graces was weird. It's technically Sci fi, one of your party members is LITERALLY A COLLECTION OF NANOBOTS yet the High Fantasy was still strong w it... Honestly I don't mind the settings too much, I just wish they'd have some variation on "this technology is bad and killing people/the planet".
It occurs to me that pirate mc would be a GREAT opportunity for a world made up entirely of islands, or some post-apocalyptic flooded setting. Damn, if Namco doesn't do this I'm keeping it for myself.
