One of the very first early Fantasy novels, about the same time as Lord Dunsany and James Branch Cabell. Amazingly beautiful language, if you can stand the purpleness, but it's done oh so well and oh so beautifully. The characters and plots are kind of all over the place - someone once said, I don't remember who or where, that if it had been written a hundred years later people would assume it was a writeup of his D&D campaign. But the good bits are really, really good.
Okay so I'm an awful person because I keep reading ten pages of it at a time every few weeks, but to be fair every time I hit a word I don't know I get frustrated and have to look it up. I tried bringing a dictionary along with me once; I will not do it again. That said, I really enjoy reading it otherwise and I'm going to try to get through the rest of it once I find my copy again.
