inspired by Tumblr.txt. who loves this movie? what exactly is it about it that you love? is Hiccup the world's biggest nerd, yes or yes?
PLOPS DOWN IN THREAD I LIVE HERE NOW also paging @IvyLB who went to the theatres with me to watch the second part i love those movies a lot! because DRAGONS small dragons, bigg dragons, FUCKOFF HUGE DRAGONS, fat dragons, sleek dragons, short dragons, long dragons, dragons that breathe fire and those who belch out gas and those who are just really really fast D R A G O N S
Hiccup is definitely the world's biggest nerd. I'm in love with Astrid, also. I looooooooove the little montage where he's getting to know Toothless and applying his new knowledge to the dragons and it's just. yes. great. good movie. Toothless is adorable and I want one.
continuing this discussion—this reminds me of the time I attempted to decipher said runic text without knowing if it was coherent or corresponded to English in any way. I was just gonna take the parts of the texts that were read aloud and compare the English to the runes to see if there were any similarities. I was busy sitting cross-legged in front of the TV transcribing (I of course had the DVD) when my dad came in and asked me what I was doing, so that was the end of that project. :( smol me: just as much of a language nerd as I am now.
I had no idea they were accurate Elder Futhark, but that is really cool. also....I love the moment when Hiccup's dad is like "WE FINALLY HAVE SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT" and he's all excited and then it's just. so awkward.
I wanted to be able to read the parts of the book that weren't read aloud and understand what they said. also, as I said, language nerd. if there's a conlang I will figure it out. also, @LadyNighteyes, I didn't initially think of this in my rush to share my own experience, but: why the hell are you familiar enough with Elder Futhark to be able to read it at flipping-through-book speed??? that is so cool????
<sidetrack> *war flashbacks to my realization that all of the languages in the Inheritance Cycle were just ciphers for English, and my ensuing plunge into pits of despair at Paolini's lack of creativity* </sidetrack>
I HAVE STARTED CRYING WITH JOY. I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING MY EYES ARE FILLED WITH TEARS. BEST. QUOTE. EVER. I CAN STILL DELIVER IT WITH THAT INTONATION. FOR A WHILE, I USED IT TO REACT TO LITERALLY EVERYTHING EXASPERATING WITH IT, UNTIL I GOT TIRED OF HAVING TO EXPLAIN THE CONTEXT TO ANYONE WHO WENT "????" ABOUT IT.
Can we all appreciate that goddamn cannonball/net thingy Also wait //off topic Did anyone like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2? //off topic
I CAN ALSO DELIVER IT WITH THAT INTONATION, AND I LOVE IT, AND I AM GOING TO USE IT FOR ANYTHING EXASPERATING EVER AND SCREW ANYONE WHO IS CONFUSED
no, i got that part ::D sorry if that was worded ambigously. more like, why was your father the end of the project.
In elementary school I went to a summer camp program where we learned about Vikings, and I learned it there. The teacher liked to use it for coded messages. It is simultaneously a deeply awesome and deeply useless skill, and I periodically come across stuff that causes me to look stuff up to refresh my memory. I'm not the FASTEST reader of it and there are some letters I forget a lot, but I could spot recognizable words. Normally when people are bullshitting runes I don't.
aaaah I love that moment too! well, idk if I love it exactly, because it gives me major secondhand embarrassment. but yeah like he just has this incredibly excited expression on his face and there's this loooong beat of silence and it's like. Stoick. Stoick, no. you mean the, like, bolo cannon thing? man I love the bolo cannon thing. especially the point where Hiccup puts his hand on it and it just goes the fuck off, like A+, best engineering. because I react with deep and visceral shame to people thinking something is Weird. note that Weird things usually do not include nerdy shit—like, I know people think I'm weird when I'm super excited about something, I usually don't care—but sometimes they do, especially since I care somewhat more about my dad's opinion than I do about some rando's in Latin class. also I have a weird track record with projects, etc.—I get super into something and then suddenly don't care about it at all, which I think is what happened there too. I'm just amazed that you remember something you learned in elementary school well enough to still kinda read it.
I have a really, really, really good memory for random useless facts. Couldn't tell you when I last ate half the time, but goddamn can I tell you how big the Electoral College is, how to hatch a cockatrice, and the rules to The Ant Game.
