a thread for acronyms, common sayings, and turns of phrase! post some of your favorites (plus meanings please), ask questions about the ones that have always confused you, or even post a funny miscommunication you have seen or been a part of.
Not sure if this is what you mean, but my brain always reads wrt as the noise a cat makes trying to stick out its tongue and purr at the same time. Also orz, i always read that as a kensjin-style 'oro'.
uuugh i hated orz for the longest time until i learned it was an emoticon instead of an acronym and yeah this is essentially what i meant haha.
Orz is actually a graphic, of a stickfigure kneeling with it´s head on the floor, (kinda like the traditional japanese bow) OTL is the same. uwu is also a graphic, closed eyes and a kitty mouth.
see, i always pronounced them. my brother said them out loud because he was and still is weeaboo trash. it was all very confusing.
I love owo, uvu etc. and I always read them out loud. uvu is like a soft tiny owl hoot, and owo like a very silly and excited "oooh!"
A lot of those Japanese-style emoticons I don't really recognize what emotion is being intended. As far as I can work out, uwu is "I'm a smug asshole".
My dad uses a lot of nonstandard acronyms that I've picked up. ptfo is "pass(ed) the fuck out" ktfo is, relatedly, "knocked the fuck out" Both sometimes get 'd added to show past tense if it flows better. bbt is "bitch be tripping" (generally used for when a person is actually hallucinating/seriously flippinf their shit instead of the more casual use of the phrase). Also phrased as "A case of bbt" or "-of the bbts" tdtl is "too dumb to live" (Usually used when discussing character actions instead of actual people: someone who's obviously going to die before the movie/series/book is over because of their lack of survival instincts.)
not QUITE the thread topic (but related to the sounding out of acronyms): in the big group chat I used to be a part of, when we would do calls, we started out saying "I'll bee-arr-bee", which eventually shortened to "berb", which we then started typing out in the chat. Same with "bbl" becoming "bibble". oh, and "lawl", but I don't remember if we did that before it was cool or not.
I have a friend who uses those types of emoticons a lot. It's sort of frustrating honestly, especially since every time I ask what one of them means he'll just say "it's an emoticon" On a related note, does anyone know what emotion "ene" is supposed to express?
@overpants-anon Assuming it's along the same lines as owo and the like, looks to me like narrowed or half-closed eyes and frowny-mouth. A displeased or upset expression, basically. But I have no idea if it's right, you'll have to guess by context. xP
With Respect To is what I learned, but they essentially mean the same thing so either works. An old tech-support one: a PEBKAC issue. Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair; in other words, the user is being a dumbass. Now fairly old, so dying out. IIRC: If I Recall Correctly
I used to see IMO (In My Opinion) and IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) a lot. And I think I recall a forum where people had jokingly started using IMNSHO (In My Not So Humble Opinion). @littlemissCodeless I'm glad you explained that because I thought orz was an acronym that I knew the contextual but not the literal meaning of. I mean, my brain is still going, "But even if I never figured out what it stood for exactly, I know what it means! It means um ... uhhhh ... ummmm...."
WTF: what the fuck WTH: what the hell AFK: Away from keyboard AFAIK: As Far As I Know AFAIS: As Far As I See (rarer) AFAICT: As Far As I Can Tell (rarer)
...my brain wants to read it in Cyrillic alphabet, so it'd be pronounced 'revkas' instead of 'pebkats'. It's doubly funny because I knew what PEBKAC meant before and Cyrillic is not my native alphabet. My favourite acronym is probably FUBAR (fucked up beyond all recognition). It just flows off the tongue.
