Let's plays, but without commentary. Literally it would just be capturing the game play, with zero outside commentary from myself or the person playing. The goal would be for the person to experience the game itself, instead of me.

This mostly comes from my own irritation with a lot of let's plays, which end with people talking a lot. Disrupting dialogue, or generally being unfunny. Sometimes I just really want to see the game, but either don't have the skill to play it myself, or don't own the system to play it on!

So. How do others tend to feel about this? I think at the end of game, I'd probably just do my commentary, or how I felt about playing said game. Or it'd be a separate video that documents how I felt/what I experienced.

I am very fond of LPs that don't have someone talking in them. Cryaotic is pretty much the only LPer who does commentary that I can watch because he has genuine and not over the top emotional reactions, never, ever talks over cutscenes, and has a pleasant and soothing voice that doesn't get all LOUD FOR NO REASON.

I do like knowing people's reactions to and thoughts on games, but I much prefer to read the commentary - I sometimes can't parse voices worth a damn and often get a case of loud ears when I try to listen to someone talking and it ends up grating and upsetting. I can usually read just fine, though, and even on a bad ADHD day I can manage so long as the text is broken up into small paragraphs.

    /nods! Good to know!

It is possible I might just throw commentary in the description.

Ironically, I really hate Cryotic's voice for some reason. I don't know why. I'm weird I guess.

Most of the games I have always wanted to play/watch lets plays of have commentary and it is kind of maddening.

Also: I totally understand that part, I have issues with figuring out what people are saying. Especially if multiple people are talking at once. I always have the subtitles on if it's an option in games because hahaha

Saaaame. When games started going to largely voice acted instead of text-based for dialogue, I was really distressed for quite a while. D:

I hate when lpers talk over cutscenes. I am terrible enough at parsing spoken language- hell I put subtitles on when I'm watching regular old telly. I loooooove a good screenshot lp for this reason, but they're becoming rarer.

I absolutely prefer let's plays with no vocal commentary, but I enjoy reading their thoughts. So putting stuff in a description seems like a good way to balance that.

i love no commentary let's plays and ones with commentary depending on the game. if it's something like tales from the borderlands that i want to know the story of but can't make decisions for quick enough without dying, a no commentary let's play is perfect! but if it's something like Among The Sleep i kinda need that feeling of someone pointing out all the neat scenery and making terrible jokes, then getting scared at their own shadow to distract me from how scary it is. i don't really like lpers that play it up too much though.

i guess i'm trying to say, yeah if you did silent let's plays with commentary at the end or in the description, i'd probably watch them.

also, something other sub users might note: youtube's predictive subtitles are still kinda shit, but they're a lot better than they used to be. you might try turning them on every once in a while, youtube is actually being pretty active with working on them and i've even had a few videos in the past with almost completely accurate subs that weren't pre entered.

If i was better at hearing/understanding, I honestly would also subtitle game plays with games that don't come with subs. But I am really bad at that :c

I might do it, but enlist a friend who can hear better than me.

Either way, I def appreciate the suggestions/comments guys!

Ugh, commentaryless LPs are great. I mean, yeah, it's funny to watch people react to certain games, but you also want to be able to get your own impressions even if you can't play the game yourself for whatever reason. Plus it makes getting references for fic or whatever SO much easier.

absolutely! i totally agree there. there have been a lot of games i really just wanted to see the game, but i can't play it for whatever reason.

I think I will def at least give it a try, I'll probably leave commentary in the description of the video.

Also: Game suggestions are welcome. I know the first game I want to do is Grim Fandango. For sure. I would need to get a usb xbox controller before playing some of the others i have on steam though, as I actually do not have the mental coordination for mouse and keyboard at the same time.

I like these though more for...showing people things or looking something up more than enjoyment. They're a sort of research material for me basically. I honestly get pissy when I can't find commentariless playthroughs of things because I want to show someone gameplay. Though I suppose they could also offer the benefit of being able to show them to a friend or a few to commentate over. Kind of like what retsupurae does with longplays? Or how you watch shitty movies with friends. Never done it myself though because eh. Though I want to with Other M because fuck Other M that piece of shit deserves to be roasted with friends.

Entertainment wise though I am definitely a commentary lp sort of type, either subtitled or spoken. Though I greatly prefer spoken because voices make me a happy person and I love voices. Especially certain voices. The aforementioned retsupurae I go to when down because Diabetus and Slowbeef just have very comforting voices to me. It's part of why I prefer watching speedruns during marathons like AGDQ over just normal runs being recorded. Though again with that, normal runs with minimal to no commentary are lovely for research purposes.

Grim Fandango playthrough would be nice though because wow I can show people shit. Look at this thing. LOOK AT IT. AND WITHOUT HAVING TO LISTEN TO SOME ASSHOLE.

Grim Fandango is great because honestly it discusses stuff itself. just. good voice acting good stuff. good place to have a commentaryless LP.

Like sometimes I have been known to watch commentary lets plays, but usually for shit that I don't care much about actual gameplay and more the youtuber doing it. plus i have a gross voice and no one wants that :V
