So Roach mentioned Imperial Radch in the planning thread and I started thinking about ships and captains. Spoiler: musings on ships in Radch context I had the impression that Ships in Imperial Radch were sort of compelled to love their captains, bypassing the 'normal' way they found favourites. Killing a ship's captain is always treated as this "the fuck are you expecting" idea in the books, protagonist says at some point that there are captains you like because they're captains and there are captains you like-like (but apparently there are no captains that you don't care about). I get the feeling a Ship's captain can't ever be an unfavourite. It sort of makes sense, because the captain and the Ship have the most control over the crew's lives. If Ship doesn't like the captain, the situation may devolve into a series of very Radchaai passive-agression contests and no one wants that in close quarters,. So it may seem better for whoever builds the AIs to mildly brainwash the Ships so that they always like the captain a little. Anyway, now I'm thinking, do the sleazier captains in Space Navy AU ever try to compel their Helmsmen to like-like them? Not like or respect them because they're nice decent people, not simply box Helmsmen in with brain-zapper programming, but try to alter their brains to the point where they genuinely like the captain, no matter what the Helmsman would think on their own. ...this is a fridge horror I'm not sure I needed.
Erskin, the whole "uphold the chain of command" thing is rather undercut when you end disciplinary sentences with "and a spanking". :-)

I love how pervasive Boat Trolls has become in Homestuck Fanon. I just found yet another reference to Sunslammer Down in yet another fanfiction written by someone not directly involved in Boat Trolls. Hell, I was incredibly tempted to make a reference in Lovve 8ites but wasn't sure if it was acceptable and was too shy to ask. It's a fandom-spanning Easter Egg.
