BNHA: Where your quirk is not the written kind

This is the most excited I've been for bnha in awhile. The shigaraki backstory is killer.

Uh. wow, that was brutal. Didn't actually expect Hori to go there.

That said, I've seen a lot of people just accept Shigaraki's claims where he's like 'maybe I DID want to hurt my family. Maybe that's what I wanted all along'. Um, considering his claims about him wanting his sister to save him a few seconds before he starts convincing himself he always wanted that, I just genuinely think Shigaraki is an unreliable narrator who is implanting some of his current views onto old memories. Literally everyone has been telling Shigaraki for years he is intended for destruction, and AFO calls him 'warped since birth'.

Def believe he killed dad on purpose though.

Separately, I'm not a huge fan of the Overhaul arc (though it does have some moments I DO like and look forward to) - so the concept that we're going to have to wait so long for the things that come after it (which are things I Like) to be adapted is painful. But these things are a necessary part of the story and have some good elements. One must endure.

I do think the pacing of Overhaul arc will be improved by being animated though, since a lot of the action sequences won't feel so bogged down by wait time.

The entire thing with Shigaraki is so fascinating to me because. There's a couple of ways I could see this going.

    1. His quirk was latent all along and was only released after the straw that broke the camel's back if you will
    2. (Less likely in context of the story as a whole but makes more sense to me given how Shigaraki's story specifically went) The massive stress and true and sincere wish for destruction spawned a quirk in a quirkless man out of nowhere (think Mob Psycho and how psychic powers are based in emotion; albeit we don't know his family history as far as quirks go so if there is some level of destructive quirk in his parents/grandparents this theory is rendered basically completely nul and void).

Coming in here as (so far) an anime-only fan -

My main question would be how worthwhile is it to read the manga? One of the reasons I've avoided it until now is that this is the first shounen action series that has really grabbed me since Naruto, and I've since concluded that reading ahead on the manga in that case ruined my appreciation of the anime.

Between growing my hatred of filler arcs and the anime's treatment of some of my favourite manga arcs, I'm worried that the same thing will happen with BNHA and Ruin my interest in either, which is what happened with Naruto. Is this show prone to filler and I'm just not aware of it, or am I safe to read along in the knowledge I won't be hecked up again like I was?

That said, this show does some things MUCH BETTER than the kind of shounen I'm used to. A protagonist that has actual analytical skills without being morally grey at best, actual inclusion of an nb/trans character (I thought Magne was nb before I read otherwise lol) just ONE ecchi character who almost none of the characters like... Maybe my standards are set really low but like, it's really impressed me so far.

Bakugou is my trash fire son and I love him, as well, but I'm in the camp where they both need to do a lot more growing before I'm prepared to even ship him pitch with Izuku. Kiribaku all the way, lol.

So, I'm finally starting to watch BNAH, and I'm on season 4 now. I've been watching the subs on Crunchyroll, and I don't know where I'd find the dubs. (I'd be interested in watching the dubs, to see the difference, though. And because sometimes I don't want to be distracted from the scene by having to read the subtitles.)

I love Bakugo, but I think his reason for behaving the way he does isn't just "his mom is abusive". In the anime, when we see the flashback to Midoriya asking Bakugo if he's okay and offering a hand up, after Bakugo falls into the creek, it's preceeded by the other kids they're with going "Bakugo is fine, there's nothing he can't handle!"

And Bakugo is a bully, during middle school (and absolutely abusive to Midoriya), but I think he's painfully aware that if he slips and falls and isn't capable of handling shit, his lackeys will turn on him...and his quirk doesn't give him a whole lot of ways of handling things that let him be non-lethal. Not at that point, anyway. And while I haven't seen what Quirk Counselling involves (if it gets shown at any point), I imagine it's intended for kids whose quirks can harm other people or be destructive, and that it's very heavy-handed on "if you are caught doing property damage or hurting someone with your quirk, you will be arrested and thrown in jail Forever" in order to properly terrify kids into Never Ever Ever doing anything like that while they're under the teacher's watch.

Everyone in the environment he grew up in, with the exception of Midoriya, hammered in that if he showed any signs of weakness, he'd be in trouble and if he couldn't handle himself, he'd be considered a target. And unlike Midoriya, who was able to keep his heart open despite this, Bakugo's response was to front as hard as he possibly could and act like of course he could handle anything, of course he's the biggest baddest asshole on the playground; how dare anyone think differently or consider otherwise.

And All Might going "you must have been scared, but it’s okay", in a public setting - in front of other pro heroes, in front of the villains who had kidnapped him and held him for days...that's too much for Bakugo to cope with. He can't let down his front in that situation, not when he's in trouble.

I think Midnight being matched up with Sero and Mineta was intended, on the teachers' part, to try and address Mineta's gross behavior? At least in part. I think it was also just that they only have so many teachers in the hero course, and pulling in a pro hero for the final exam costs money and favors they might need later...plus the pro is not necessarily going to know how to pull their punches, which could be really bad for the students. (Recall Recovery Girl telling All Might that if he had been just a little rougher on Midoriya during the final exam, he would've done permanent damage!)

But I think it was partially to try and tell Mineta that he can't behave the way he does towards women, because there are consequences for it and those consequences could kill him if he doesn't shape up.

Also, I suspect Sero got rescue points for saving Mineta, but they were negated by 1) him throwing Mineta in a direction that wasn't the gate (meaning Mineta had to do the rest of the fight on his own) and 2) getting caught by Midnight and not thinking to use his tape as an improvised gas mask.

I'd like it to be Mineta, but the summer training camp incident makes me suspect it can't be him. The only ones who were supposed to have the information on where the camp had been moved to were the teachers, and the Pussycats.

Granted, that doesn't rule out Mineta having stolen that info somehow - but he'd have to have stolen it, because there’s no legit means for him to know it any sooner than the rest of class 1A.

Currently, my money is on one of the teachers. Not Aizawa, Present Mic, Midnight, or All Might. Possibly not even one of the ones in the hero course - I could see it being a disenchanted, deeply jaded general studies teacher who thinks this whole hero thing is bullshit and needs to be torn down, especially after years of watching their students throw themselves against the wall of trying to get into the hero course.

The "we've checked and none of our students are suffering negative psychological effects from the Summer Camp Incident" line from the principal makes it sound like they've at least got school counselors? And considering that it's being repeated that heroes will see some seriously dark and awful shit during their careers, I'd sure as hell hope that heroes are encouraged to see therapists.

But 1) Japan, and 2) I imagine the therapists are voluntary unless a teacher notices that a student is dealing with some seriously fucked-up shit that can't be handled by a single cathartic fight. Possibly they can only recommend that medical take steps to require the student to see a therapist.

Would it help to know that it's not a long tournament arc? Also, there is Shinso and the purble bab is A Good. Also, also, Bakugo having to be chained to the podium.

Meanwhile, I just finished the "rescue Eri" arc and I have an important question: why does this world not have more people who have healing quirks? Like, quirks whose intent is to heal others. We see Recovery Girl, but that's the only person we've seen who has a quirk that's specifically for healing people.

You'd think, with all the heroes getting the shit beaten out of them, there'd be more people who went "yknow what, I don't have a quirk that's useful for fighting, but I can heal like a motherfucker so I'm going to be a doctor".

Considering that his scars didn't get undone by Eri's oops, I'm pretty sure that his joints are still fucked from how he was using One For All. (And they're not going to get better, really.)

I absolutely agree that chronic pain issues makes sense for Deku, and more: I don't think he'd realize it's chronic pain for a while. He's been in combat so often, and gets beat up so often during training, that his default state right now anyways is probably 'low-grade pain'. I think it'd take him mentioning to someone that he's more sore than usual because it's so humid, and Iida or someone else pointing out that he shouldn't be sore at all because there's been plenty of time for him to recover from their last training session.

...and then, in my headcanon, Bakugo drags Deku to the nurse's station, because his rival isn't allowed to be weakened by poor health.

I WATCHED THE LATEST EP ON CRUNCHYROLL

I'M SO PROUD OF MY BOY I COULDN'T STOP GRINNING THE WHO TIME OMG. B-MAN IS FINALLY LEANING HOW TO PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS AND WHEN HE DOES HE'S FUCKING UNSTOPPABLE I'm so freaking happy I can't breathe :D :D

Also, re: the above Bakugou headcanons - I was intially reluctant to read much into his childhood douchebaggery, because I was badly bullied all the way through grade and high school and sometimes kids just turn on someone they perceive to be an easy target for no other reason than that (in my case, brainweird and physical undiagnosed disabilities, in Midoriya's, quirklessness and the stubborn will to get in the way of other kids being abused) but I suppose the character evaluations above do make sense.

But again, I was also a victim of parental abuse - which makes Endeavor extra asshole to me, I hate his guts - and its made me nope the fuck out of situations where I'm tempted to behave that way to other people. In short, 'cool motive, still murder'.

He's starting to get his shit back together in my eyes, but he's never gonna be fully redeemed to me until he goes on his knees before Izuku and fully apologises. Which I will be very surprised if ever happens, so that's always gonna be a black mark in his book as far as I'm concerned.

my brain: :coughs up baby's first self insert character by tapping into my health problems:
.... endurance quirk. can be shared by touching. gives the ability to withstand ridiculous amounts of physical strain and discomfort while active to push past normal breaking points. Is activated whenever they stand up, and deactivates when they are no longer upright be that by sitting down like a sensible person or collapsing due to the strain it puts on the body. bc of the activation issues they're typically in a wheelchair to avoid the whole Constantly Collapsing shit.

    any of ya'll have ocs?

    I do!

    Quirk: Replace

Can switch body parts with a given donor - alive or dead - permenantly or for a select amount of time. After training, can do this for other people. (Born with chronic pain and has to switch out limbs regularly or be crippled by it.)

    Quirk: Copy Cat

Mimics attributes of whatever animal they touch for up to an hour. For example, if they mimicked a rat, they could fit through any space their skull can fit through, can hear ultrasonic frequencies, and chew through anything up to the hardness of copper. Usually keeps at least a rat friend or similar on their person in case of emergencies. If they hit or exceed their time limit, usually loses the ability to speak or think in a human-level way for the rest of the day.

Edit: ALSO I WOULD BE SUPER INTO DOING AN OC RP IN THIS SETTING DM ME IF YOU'RE DOWN FOR IT TOO :D
