Well, as an international who went to several international schools, it is very easy for the diplomats children's to go to an international school chock-full of kids from different countries, the local country's wealthy high class, sometimes scholarship kids if the school has that, and the ocassional kid whose parents sacrifice their time and money for to get them into the Best School TM.

I also don't know much about boarding schools, but if you're in a developing country, people who go to these schools live in specific neighborhoods, so I can give ideas for that. Even if it is a special foster project, they're going to want to have any potential kids to have friendships and live in a place that is acceptable to the society in their school.

That sounds like a boarding school. No, by specific neighborhoods, I mean more of "these are the rich people neighborhoods". For example, Lima has the traditional old San Isidro neighborhood, within which a lot of the old families live. A few have moved to La Molina, where there is more space. Some, however, move in areas like my neighborhood. We all went to the same school.

KEL IS MY FAVOURITE YES THANK YOU SHE IS THE BEST.

Tamora Pierce's novels are some of my favourite young adult fantasy. Especially the Circle books. I love material manipulation powers, and also ensemble casts. It's a shame there was never a book about Briar and Rosethorn's experiences in not Tibet etc

Actually, that book was fine, but not up to her usual standard.

About modern Circle: That would create the opportunity for ambient programming mages. I want to see ambient programming mages.

    This fic is great!

    AMBIENT PROGRAMMING MAGES AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Dude, I swear I work with one of these. Dude will literally sit down at a computer with a problem, type some esoteric blarghlarghl, and bam, problem solved!

Ooh, ambient programming mages who just kind of "know" how the code should be written, and can troubleshoot like woah, but every time they try to write a program, it's klugey and half the time it just doesn't work for some unknown reason, so they have to learn academic magic before they can write good programs that work consistently!

Aka how I write pretty much everything lol

Ambient programming mages who know what computers are "thinking" and can see the bits in the computer memories flashing on and off, but still need training to understand any language higher level than assembly because they so abstracted.

Another power idea: Direct brain input.

So I was lurking in this thread and people were commenting about how magic can be like...stuff you do every day, and doesn't have to be ritualized, and someone else commented how they were a programmer and how that's kind of like magic and ANYWAY it got me to thinking and like...You know how you'll be having a computer problem and you call $IT_Person and then as soon as they are standing there, everything magically works?

    BAM AMBIENT MAGIC.

But not the same as ambient programming mages. I mean, ambient programming mages can definitely have this kind of effect, but I feel like there's also ambient computer technicians who are just really good at fixing people's computer troubles, but they're also really good at customer service and calming down frustrated end users so I guess they have some flavor of....empathetic ambient magic that works on both computers and people? Because I work with people like this. They're not the most technical, but they're super good with people all the time and are uncannily good at diagnosing common computer issues even with poorly worded trouble tickets or angry customers who insist nothing is their fault and i swear to god it is magic because HOW DO.

(I have a lot of feelings about ambient computer-related everything and I will never not be convinced that computers actually involve some kind of sorcery/witchcraft/demon summoning/etc.)

I dig the idea of like... ambient tinkering too. I've seen some modern!Daja interpretations that take smithing and apply that to cars and heavy machinery too, because well. It's a little bit different, but knowing how to make and how to fix seems very up Daja's alley (see also: the prosthesis).

Ambient retail magic. Ambient food service magic. Picture ambient cooking mages who learn to do shit like barista-ing and flipping burgers without ever learning that they have magic, turning their particular restaurants into hot spots because oh?? my god??? have you TRIED this place's burgers????

I'd like to be technical theater ambient, if that was a thing... always knowing what lights to hang where and at what angle to make everything look best, the ways to get the best performance out of everything...

I would like to be bioinformatics ambient, knowing which tools play best with your datasets, easily interpreting results, seeing patterns even before you analyze so you have a direction to go in, your assemblies are all great... Either that or experimental ambient, so you know what to do to test a hypothesis, your experiments go really really well, you get good data..... Sigh.

hello friends, i have a ton of opinions about these books but currently i am rereading Lady Knight (i love kel, but the kel books grabbed me the least, so i hadn't reread them) and... I still think both Neal's crush on Daine and Neal's enduring grudge towards Numair are hilarious. Daine/Neal/Numair pls

    i am only mostly joking
