And I know nothing about your system of magic, so I cannot help. There are as many forms as there are stars; I use only one, and it is an innate ability I cannot reproduce.

"Um...." Mabel sighs. "It's where you go when you have to, you know...pee? Poop?" Do genies even do those things? But they eat. She's seen Norm eat at home. Norm eats a lot, and he was really loud about the absence of chocolate from the snack cupboard and fridge. The food has to go somewhere when they're done with it.

Has she ever seen Norm come out of the bathroom? She's not sure. There are a lot of bathrooms in Ford and Valiska's house because there are a lot of floors in it. So even if she hasn't ever seen him coming out of one of the bathrooms, that doesn't mean he never goes.

"Me too." Mabel looks relieved. "And...good, I was wondering if I should've reassured you that floorbots aren't sapient. They would probably be very bored if they were. All they do is clean floors...and sometimes walls and ceilings, but we usually don't need them to do that, except for the time Shin and Lukat coloured all over the walls." She sighs. "I guess you could call them a pack. There's only eight, unless Cordelia has joeys--and I think they're all family."

Referring to something as 'it' generally implies nonsapience, at least in my experience, but... yes, I should probably have asked. [She shrugs.] Dealt with enough nonsapient predators trying to take down mechs anyway, one more victim makes little difference even if the floorbots were sapient.

[She pauses, looking a little sad.] Only eight, and all related? Do you know how prone to recombination errors they are? With such a small breeding population...

"I know," Mabel says with a sigh. "We're trying to find more. I wish I could take that one home with me! Melon is looking to see if she has any genetic material in storage, because she visited a planet that had them once, but the Gems kind of destroyed that one. Just like they did the one we got ours from. If it helps, I think not all the adults were originally related, but since they have pups together they're family? I'm not sure which of the males is the father of Manya's pups. Or if it was someone else, which would be sad for Manya but better for what's left of the species. But Cordelia and Jasper are definitely brother and sister."

She pauses. "Also I wasn't criticising you for not saying anything. I was trying to say I was sorry for talking about Cordelia killing a bot so casually in front of you without mentioning that it was a bot that wasn't a person."

 

-A kitten apurrs. He looks rather irritated- "Why do i have to be sleeping, I was trying to read!"

 

Ah. In that case, apology accepted. I do hope your Melon comes up with more genetic material; it would be a shame if inbreeding brought the species to extinction just when you've managed to save them.

Not that long! -if Onyx chooses to look she will see a kitten tucked up into a loaf on his berth, nose dropped onto the datapad he´s been reading for a good two or three hours past his bedtime-
