    It's Critmas, we're gonna roll a lot of 1s and 20s.

This is Maze of the Blue Medusa, friends; I don't need to fudge dice rolls to challenge you. :P Stella rolled that 1 fair and square.

yes, but that doesn't mean we can't complain about it! >:] also I have decided to just go for the ranged spell attack, so could you check if the process I'mma use is right, Frood? my understanding is that I roll a d20 and add my spell attack modifier (which is my +3 proficiency bonus plus the modifier of my spellcasting ability—which is Charisma for this spell, so +4—for a total of +7), and if that trumps the target's AC, I roll damage as instructed in the spell's description, right?

That's correct. You may as well roll damage at the same time to expedite things: we're online simultaneously right now but that's not always the case.

post made, possibly with an excess of descriptive text! and the Player's Handbook says to make a separate attack roll for each beam, but it doesn't say whether to roll damage individually for both, I don't think. I ended up doing that, but my first damage roll was 3 if you want to make them the same.

Yeah, you roll damage individually. (I didn't even realize eldritch blast splits at higher levels until now.) First one misses, second one hits.

Eldritch blast gets badass in the right hands.

@The Frood Abides yup! don't most of the damage-dealing cantrips do something like that? they make regular spells more powerful as you level up by increasing damage for higher spell slot levels, and I think they want to make cantrips more powerful, too, so they increase the number of targets or whatever. Lyriae moved so the tiger didn't have any cover, right? it was just that the tiger's AC is more than 14?

...do those hands include Lyriae's, and if not how do I make it badass anyway

edit: is it the tiger's turn now, or does @thegrimsqueaker have to roll initiate for Liron first?

@esotericPrognosticator well, you're not going to get any of the invocations that enhance eldritch blast, unless you multiclass to warlock, but 1d10 force damage (scaling with level) is pretty useful anyway.

and yeah @thegrimsqueaker still needs to roll initiative.

oh fuck they need to gtfo of range as soon as they can. Liron's proficient w their quarterstaff, but that's a last resort kinda thing.

    wait

doesn't Liron have more hit points than Alabaster?

...y'know, I might've backed myself into a corner there characterization-wise (Lyriae does not go in for subservience), but, uh, I wouldn't mind multiclassing to warlock? I mean, she has hella Charisma and thus hella warlock spellcasting ability, and warlocks get some sick class feats. if she could arrange a suitably balanced relationship with her patron (which poses an issue, unless she, like. seduced a fey noblewoman or something?? idfk), I'd be all for it. it's an entirely academic issue, of course, since her survival to level up is not at all assured at this point.

I'm continually angry about the continual devaluation of quarterstaffs at the hands of things like D&D, honestly?? like. have you seen someone actually use a quarterstaff. they fuck shit up magnificently in the right hands and aren't nearly as fussy to use as, say, a rapier. you just hit someone upside the head and they ded. /raeg also too bad shillelagh isn't available to wizards, 'cause that powers quarterstaffs right the hell up.

yeah, if she has more than sevENTEEN FUCKING HIT POINTS ALABASTER WHY
...actually, currently I think they have, like. four hit points? maybe? @Wiwaxia I don't mean to godmod and lemme know if my saying this is rude it might be but please for the love of god lay hands on yourself ASAP I live in fear

I'm glad you got a laugh out of it! :D of course you may post it, but would you mind putting a little context under a cut so my reputation isn't entirely ruined? ;) (also, personally I think context makes it slightly funnier.) and, like, at least Liron has an excuse for having a shitty HP total since her hit dice are d6?? Alabaster's are d10! 5d10!!!

sure thing! and yeah, this is the squishy wizard character that I made to be as squishy and unsuited to life outside a library as possible. that they have more hp than our paladin certainly makes for an interesting challenge

edit: quoted. how's that for context?

excellent context, I approve! (although you perhaps should fix Alabaster's pronouns.)

I thought Alabaster went by "he" pronouns?

  18. esotericPrognosticator

esotericPrognosticator still really excited about kobolds tbqh

nope, "they"! their character sheet doesn't mention gender or pronouns, and for some reason I also assumed they went by "he" at first (Alabaster is Indubitably a male name, apparently?), but @Wiwaxia has always used "they."

The Frood Abides Doesn't Know Where His Rug Is

    AFAIK: Stella, Lyriae, and Sarnai = she/her, Liron = she/her or they/them, Alabaster = they/them.

All right, I'll go post for the Lion and then for Stella.

EDIT: I've never played with an Oath of the Ancients paladin with a binary gender. I guess fey are all about liminal spaces...

wheeeee baby's first damage!!! :D man... Lyriae is feeling very faint...... she only has 27 HP left, however shall she manage.......... (alllllso I'm not 100% on how the natural healing process thing works? I mean, this may not be relevant considering the fuckin' 10-ish-minute random encounter tables, but there's a mechanic for regaining HP over long rests, right? how does that work?)

goDDAMMIT FUCKER'S RESISTANT TO SLASHING/PIERCING AND I BET BLUDGEONING (possibly magical weapons deal regular damage buuuuut we don't have any of those) I TOTALLY CALLED THAT... it's probably a good thing that everyone except Stella is a spellcaster huh

anyyyyyway @Wiwaxia @thegrimsqueaker do y'all wanna take your turns now in accordance with initiative rolls, or shall Lyriae see how this guy likes lightning damage? >:] (also @The Frood Abides 1) Stella's within 5 ft. of the Lion, right? and 2) how do you rule re: whether or not ranged spell attacks can count as sneak attacks?)
