I think Light should definitely be Marinette's aspect. I have no other opinions on classpects because I don't know enough about them, but now I really want to draw them, so thanks for that. :I

Also I discovered this morning that I have gone from uncertain about Marinette's Sorting Hat Chat primary to 100% behind @witchknights theory that she's a Hufflepuff, and that if I see someone sorting her into Slytherin instead I will yell excitedly about it at great length to anyone who will listen to me.

Some things the post cited as evidence of her being a Slytherin primary were:

• her extreme attachment to/prioritization of Adrien. I'm Slytherin to the bone and I'm pretty sure that's just evidence that she's a headstrong person with a crush.
• "skipping out on an important bakery order to be at her classmates’ race". A Slytherin who hadn't dissolved her loyalty to her parents would look at that as letting her parents down to be at her classmates’ race, firstly, and secondly she didn't actually prioritize her friends over her parents or the bakery, IIRC - the customer arrived early.
• "self-assuredness". What. I mean, I described her as "headstrong" up there and I stand by that, but Marinette canonically doubts herself even after becoming Ladybug and realising that she can be a hero. In the moment she can stand up and fight, but that's not the same thing as being self-assured.

Marinette is not a Slytherin primary. She is a textbook Hufflepuff and she displays both the greatest virtue and the greatest weakness of the house. She's loyal and kind to all people, and it's highlighted in her behaviour towards akuma victims - she says herself that she's saving them, not defeating them, and no matter what damage they've caused to her and her family, friends, and/or partner, she treats them kindly and without censure or condemnation, often comforting them after she's purified the akuma. She doesn't put individual people above the common good - she's dedicated to preserving the community, she makes the promise to protect everyone, not just her family, or her friends, or her classmates, or people who haven't hurt anyone. Marinette is a fantastic Hufflepuff and I'm very happy to see a Hufflepuff heroine.

And as for her weakness:

Marinette's shift from putting up with and trying to reason with Chloé to dismissing her and anyone associated with her happened as soon as Alya told her "Choé is a force of evil and we're the good people". And Marinette doesn't just not care about Chloé or fight back when she or her friends are being attacked - she treats her harshly even when Chloé is trying to be helpful. She spends less time trying to understand Chloé than she does people who actually turn into monsters and start hunting down her classmates, or people who put her partner into mortal danger. She's not demonstrating a Slytherin's dislike of someone who has and continues to hurt her people, she's demonstrating a Hufflepuff's decision to stop thinking of someone as a person so they don't have to be nice to them anymore.

And I'm pretty excited to see how her relationship with Chloé progresses, because she did the same thing to Lila when Lila barged into Marinette's social circle (her worst behaviour came after Lila started lying to Adrien, but she was upset from the moment Lila began to affect her community) - and then, with some prompting, she realised that she had treated her badly and apologised. I don't know if Chloé will ever change, but I'd like to see Marinette realising that she can go overboard sometimes when Chloé is involved, and find a way to fight back against her without carrying her resentment into every interaction with her.

i'm glad that i'm not the only one that sees the potential problems they could have if they got together right now. 'cause i've been seeing lots of the shipping on my dash (and in some of the commentary on the subbed episodes) and how the characters are obviously set up to get together in canon, and well, felt kinda weird about it. like... "this is much less perfect than it looks on the surface."

 

I think a lot of it comes from the fandom itself being made of much younger folks - I see a lot of people in the tags that are in the 14-16 age range, at least, so they're too young/not experienced enough to notice these relationship pitfalls. And like, I'm don't exactly have a long dating list, my current boyfriendhusbandthing is the only person i've ever even kissed; but we've been kissing for ten years and a lot of time was spent in different states, so we went trough a lot of maturing together and dealt with a lot of stuff.

I mean, they are set up to get together; as Master Fu said, they're obviously made for each other, but a lot of the fandom ignores that two people being made for each other doesn't prevent either of them from needing to mature before they can get together, so /shrugs. I'm trusting that the creators are adding a hidden "eventually" in the sentence and we'll have proper character growth before they start making gross heart eyes at each other.

 

yeah, that makes sense. i certainly like it better as a reason for my difficulty shipping it than my previous theory: "i'm so into slash that het ships can't catch my interest most of the time." i mean, my old theory might also be true about me, but... yeah.

 

Nothing wrong with being a bit of both! i'm usually not much of a het shipper myself. And sometimes the fandom can get a little... tiring on the subject. I'm having violent flashbacks to Volpina.

i haven't really seen the wank but i heard a bit about it. what i've mostly been seeing is the pretty fanart.

 

It was a pretty wank-free fandom (comparatively; i used to be in the homestuck and bioware fandoms) until Volpina came out and everyone flipped panties up, and around the same time people started going at each other for drawing suggestive/nsfw stuff of the show and the whole "i'm going to call adult fans pedophiles for shipping anything in the show because i can't see the difference between liking character dynamics and being irl sexually attracted to them and cannot think of any reason beyond lust that would make people ship anything"

the pretty fanart is the best tho. So many talented people! so many cute things!

It's not exactly het ships with Volpina (i'm seeing a lot of Volpina/Chloé, actually), but Volpina wank involving everyone glossing over the flaws of the love square so they can call Lila a bitch for hitting on Adrien.

There's some stuff with Adrien as a girl! Apparently it was pretty common for peeps to mistake him(as Chat) for a chick in the promotional stuff. Kinda wanna see more of it, honestly. THe fandom trends younger, so it can fall into that "kids who've never experienced a real romantic relationship" pitfall where the peeps are just sorta slotted into roles without any thought given to actual personality. Still happens with same sex pairs, but less often, I think.

 

Now I'm thinking that "Adrianna" might make for an interesting idea even aside from 'add lesbians to everything' because of the potential differences between what a young female model might experience vs. a male model. Still interested in the fic if you remember what it was called, though.

 

Ouch. Goddamn, I hope we get to see more of Lila in season 2. And her, like, getting along with people who aren't Marinette. See more of Mari's black and white thinking issue and maybe her possessiveness get brought up? Stuff. Maybe Adrien could put some energy into befriending her. Adrien as the Mean Girl Defense Squad.

I was thinking about Peaceful nights on rooftops. Can't really attest to quality since I havent read it, but... it exists? and is rated M? and features a male ladybug?

 

Oh! That guy! Writes a lot of smut with Adrien. And dudes. Nino, mostly, if you are into that. I kinda am, cause Nino's a cutie and Adrien could use a chill dude to remind him that he needs to relax and have fun and junk. There is a disappointing lack of "Nino and Adrien are cute bros who slowly get the dokis for each other."

 

I'm honestly surprised at how little nino/adrien there is, with fandom being fandom. the lack of marinette/alya was expected, but. well.
