I woke up with chills so bad my entire body hurt! I currently have a headache and the idea of food makes me slightly ill. (I was able to eat some pop tarts, which may or may not qualify as food.) So I definitely have a virus of some kind, because the allergy meds are not working. I slept a lot of the day.

In other news, I read the Yuletide collection last night.

 

Thing that is pretty horrible when you have a C-PAP device: a runny nose. Also, needing to cough. I am hungry, but do not particularly want to eat. Next month I am buying more soupish things. This is not an auspicious start to the upcoming new year.

In other news, dealing with AHCCCS is very goddamn stressful and I was mean to someone who frankly, kind of deserved it, but still. This is why I get help from a benefits specialist when I call them.

 

I'm reading Kintsugi Kitchen and saw a recipe for polenta and now I am craving polenta.

Since I am having a "rice is not food" reaction to rice lately I would like to know what to have with my curry that I can make. It will probably not be polenta because that would be weird.

In other news, I ended up eating snack cheese and cashews. I am also currently craving barley-lentil soup and maybe also miso, though I've never had miso. (It sounds oddly nice though. Mmmm salty mystery broth with seaweed.)

 

I am reminded that my grandparent's yard in Indiana had cattails on the far end of a small pond they tried to fill up. (Which in turn caused the yard to turn into a swamp in the spring because the house was more or less on a low hill that went down toward the pond.) Grampa insisted on calling them "Bulrushes." Arguing with him was generally a mistake and a waste of time. :D This memory brought to you by someone mentioning foraging cattails.

 

Still sick, and I need to do my year in review thing on dreamwidth. I am not sure how much can be said got done. I got some fan fic written, I made some stabs at original fiction, I had a few financial disasters. I'm continuing to pursue getting Social Security benefits and will hopefully be getting a hearing.

 

I'm going to try to catch up with Shlock Mercenary, ahahahahaha. I'm not sure where I stopped reading, so I'm just going to start at a story line that looks familiar and go from there. (Note: my reading stopped some time in 2009 or so.)

 

People are setting off fire crackers and shooting their guns and its not even midnight. (They started up around eight and it's 9:34 pm now.)

I had dreams where people made fun of my slips of speech. Thanks, subconscious. There was also something involving data entry and fixing viruses by sticking codes in a folder on your hard drive. Or something. Then I was showing video of my cat (part played by a tortie point siamese). There was also a weird bit where I was going to some kind of community center and attending some kind of class about interviewing? Also there was some kind of date thing I was going on with a girl who looked familiar, but was no one I knew.

 

I am re-reading Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy! I also had to use the nebulizer. My lungs do not like me and I have a cough. I may not be able to wear apnea mask because I don't want to find out what puking in my mask is like.

Concerning the Skaianet site. There's apparently a watermarked illustration by Janny Wurts that has a Homestuck reddit (or a discord) visiting her site looking for Skaianet clues or what have you. Trust me friends, even though Wurts site looks like it hasn't been updated since the 90s, she doesn't know fuck all about Homestuck. (The illustration is one of the wizard pics btw.)

 

I realize more people were concerned about the shitshow "history timeline" but still. At least he apologized for said shitshow. :\

So, I thought one of my minispeakers was broken because one of them wasn't playing. So I disconnect and switch to my headphones...and I have the same problem where the left side isn't getting any sound. Since the headphones were fine the day before, I checked them on my radio, and both sides were working, but they didn't work when I switched back to the laptop.

I am deeply annoyed.

This story is going here instead of my main blog, my vent thread, or my writing thread because it's somewhat funny and I think I might also end up putting it up as meta/fandom on AO3.

Okay so, this was years and years ago, I was working on a fanfic with a fairly rare pairing, and all that. So I asked for help with character voice from the friend's list. (I was writing on LJ at the time.) For some reason, a Very Popular Writer who wrote the pairing decided to give me advice. I did not actually find the advice to be very helpful, because the Very Popular Writer seemed to be focusing on the actor instead of the character, so I ignored it, and sought further assistance elsewhere.

I was apparently not the only person to find the advice to be unhelpful, because a couple other people commented on it! This resulted in the Very Popular Writer accusing me of having my friends attack her--because of course there couldn't be anything wrong with her advice, I had to have told my friends to disagree with her. She flounced off to her own blog and proceeded to rant about how ungrateful I was, and of course, her followers all sympathized with her. I attempted to defend myself, but that went about as well as you'd expect. (Spoiler: It did not go very well at all)

So basically what I learned from this was:

1. Divas gonna diva. (I think I was supposed to fawn on her and her advice or something. Not disagree with it. I was accused of only wanting to hear good things about my writing instead of critique.)
2. Attempting to engage with a diva who is ranting about you on her blog, with her clique is definitely a mistake and will only result in an anxiety attack.
3. Don't have a conversation in comments about why you disagree with the feedback from said diva. This was probably my biggest mistake. The better thing would have been to continue to ignore her. However IIRC, she immediately came out with the accusation that I'd gotten my friends to disagree with her advice, so I think she was just looking for a reason to be Dramatic.

TFW you have a crying jag over a short "what if Supernatural Sburb session" and you aren't familiar with the Supernatural canon. (And also, you don't like Supernatural.)

 

I’ve seen most of Supernatural. I like the major characters and a number of the minor ones. I like the actors. I like the concept. I thought it started out pretty strong. The first episode has a jump scare that has never not worked for me, and I appreciate that. As time went on I felt the execution certainly left a lot to be desired, but I stayed for quite a while because dammit, I still liked the characters, actors, and premise. (And occasionally they’d just have an idea that was absolute gold. Like the guy who explained that he had gone back in time and unsunk the Titanic because he just hated that song so much, and nobody had the faintest clue wtf he was going on about. They even managed some truly funny celebrity guest appearances, and I generally hate those, so hats off there.) But it definitely was an experience in lowering expectations.

But wow that’s a concept. I don’t even know what to do with that because it’s so much of a concept. Holy fuck.

 

The writer wrote 500+ words of the saddest session ever, and the aftermath of same. And I was apparently feeling Inclined to be weepy at that point.

I was annoyed that the BtVS and AtS had been ended in place of Supernatural, and later heard they were very cavalier about non-Christian religions and paganism. (Which you could say the same about BtVS and AtS, but still.)
