college AUs are great. superhero AUs are good when I'm not the one writing/rping it. Mostly I like to do day-to-day stuff or mix elements from more than one fandom or mix in elements from my own creations, especially.
It can be fun to land one universe's characters in a different universe and see how they fare. How do the Enterprise crew handle being stranded on Middle-Earth.

TRASHY VAMPIRE ROMANCE AUS ALL THE WAY :D if they somehow already are vampires/other supernatural beings I like human AUs of all variety I have yet to see a Dönerbuden-AU or Bahnstreik-AU executed (Or a Shopping Queen AU) and really, German bullshit culture needs some love, but I'm too lazy to do it Q_Q
I'm such a sucker for modern AUs, especially one with a theme clearly dear to the author. I'm currently reading a Game of Thrones modern day AU set primarily around a university library, and the author is a university librarian, so it's got all these lovely little personal touches to it. Plus, I primarily read fantasy/sci fi/superhero/other junk that goes off the wall sometimes, and it's always interesting to see how people deal with those elements in a mundane world.
Dönerbuden-AU: The drunk, late night little brother of the coffeeshop AU, with such beautiful possibilities as 'Why is that person always like 'hold the onions' but then wants extra garlic sauce I'm ???????????' and 'Dude it's 8am what the fuck are you doing here? You nasty' and 'I CAN STILL HEAR YOU ARGUING WITH YOUR BOYFRIEND ON THE PHONE OVER ALL THIS SHITTY TURKISH POP AND I CANNOT MAKE THE MUSIC LOUDER WITHOUT RISKING A RUPTURED EAR DRUM AND NOW I'M CURIOUS' (ETA: i don't even like attack on titan but ever since it was p much confirmed to take place in Germany's general location I've wanted it to have a dönerbuden au fic! I'd even read the manga completely just, PLEASE i want half-turkish Eren to be the cute döner-guy q.q) Bahnstreik-AU: Let's shit talk public transportation, but TOGETHER! also have fun spending three hours waiting for a train with a stranger, a stranger who is extremely cute! possibilities include such nice subtypes as 'We were childhood friends who lost sight of eachother and re-met on this godforsaken train station in bugfuck nowhere and oh my god you are hot' and 'This pretty stranger is having a screaming breakdown over the train not coming because now they'll miss their sister's wedding. Shit lemme help them by organizing a number of vehicles and having a mildly illegal high speed roadtrip to the location of the wedding! And afterwards we'll bitch online about the bahnstreik!' Shopping Queen AU: that's a german competition tv program where you have five people who have to buy an outfit according to a provided theme (hosted by designer Guido Maria Kretschmer). Basically the premise is 'Here you have 500 bucks, here's three hours of time, the week's theme is 'rooftop party, be the hottest person present', have fun. Possibilities include 'My shopping companion (usually a friend or relative of the candidate) won't stop trying to meddle oh my god I'M TRYING TO WIN HeRE' or 'Dude that other candidate is cute, buT GUIDO WILL LIKE MY OUTFIT MORE SO SUCK IT' it's kind of hard to explain the appeal x) but they'd be really fun probably
i think the AUs i always look for the most are the soulmate AU (as i said earlier), the mafia AU, the reverse mafia AU (reverses the sides, like making the mafia either the other gang or police and vice versa), the royalty AU, the sentinal/guide AU (usually paired with something actiony), and if there's some sort of robot or AI in canon the obligatory humanized/androidized AU that someone's always gonna write.
My favorite kind of AUs thus far are bloodswaps, aspectswaps, and so on. I am very much a believer in one's circumstances affecting one's development and Homestuck itself plays with this concept. While Aranea might be absolutely horrible she is not Mindfang nor is she quite Mindfang tier in terms of awfulness. She is simply a nervous little girl with an ego problem and one friend (who picks on her and wants to ditch her much of the time) who wants to be Mindfang. So if scratching their universe had that much of an effect on Aranea and how she acts, how much would changing her social status and quest do to her. What would she be like if she were the mutant, for example? The answer I decided was she would be even more self righteous than she is as a cerulean. She is keenly aware of how shit her lot in life is and has come to view this as a sort of godsend. Because she is so aware of how she suffers, clearly she must be the best to help others who suffer from oppression. So she is quick to remind people of her blood color as well as of her epilepsy. Aranea still loves stories but due to the government's bullshit has ended up very bibliophobic. She is a firm believer in the oral tradition and has a fondness for narrative poems and just poetry in general. The epic narratives are just her favorites. As an adult on Alternia she becomes Troll Muhammad. Which leads to my other reason for really liking these sorts of swaps. Why just keep troll Jesus or excise religion entirely when I can use the swap as an excuse to research an entirely different religion? And then find a way to integrate that into Homestuck. I love religion a lot. A LOT.
I'm a filthy sucker for college and domestic aus where everyone lives and nothing hurts. (and then theres mafiastuck) (lemme tell you about mafiastuck) so basically everyone's in the mafia and the whole cast ist cooped up in a small italian village at the coast, which is ruled by the Peixes family. Felicia Peixes (Beforus!Feferi) is the family matriarch and is usually somewhere more central doing politics, her younger sister Contessa Peixes (HIC) rules the Crocker subfamily with an iron fist and has created an economic imperium. The human prospit dreamers are all either descended from her or married into the family, for the exact setup i'd have to go check the charts. John, Jade, Jane, and Jake are her great-grandkids tho, John is her fave, and is engaged to his... cousin? Feferi, because Feferi (the younger granddaughter of Felicia), is set to inherit the Peixes family, because her older cousin Meenah ditched the family and went sailing across the globe. Jade has a hand for finances, along with her other fields of prowess. The Makara family belongs to Contessas goons, and handle drug trade. The Serket family has a deal with Contessa, and handles gambling. The Ampora family works for Contessa, and controls the harbour. There are regular clashes between Mindfang and Dualscar. The Zahhak family work as mechanics, and are the Peixes' family go-to people for mechanical stuff. Redglare is a lawyer, Beforus!Terezi is a copper. No one knows why the Peixes family hasn't eradicated them. (Terezi and Latula are there too, but I'd have to check the chart for their exact jobs) The Maryam family runs an haute couture empire. The Sufferer is a preacher who moved to the town with his wife (Disciple) and his son (Karkat), as well has his brother (Beforus!Karkat) and his wife (Beforus!Nepeta, who is Disciples sister), and their son, Kankri. The Captor family work as programmers and administrators. The Nitram family run animal smuggling operations, and a zoo. The Megido family run the local museum, and Handmaid regularily butts heads with Contessa. The English family (LE, and his kids Caliborn and Calliope) along with their Felt goons are trying to butt in on local power, or at least LE is, Calliope has befriended the local kids. The Strilonde family is a family of mercenaries. Alpha!Rose is Beta!Roxys mother, who in turn is the mother of Beta!Rose and Beta!Dave, and Alpha!Roxy is her clone (rumor, but no one really knows where she came from. it's rumored Beta!Roxy has cloning machinery in her basement.). Alpha!Dave is Beta!Dirks father, who in turn is the father of Beta!Rose and Beta!Dave, and Alpha!Dirk is his clone. Beta!Roxy is Beta!Dirks beard. Then there's also Sprite, who uncannily looks like Dave's twin (origin redacted) (they found him in a bar). Alpha!Rose has the uncanny ability to know exactly what's going on. John and Karkat meet in an attic where they've both been handcuffed to chairs because they've been kidnapped, John muscles out of his handcuffs, picks Karkat's, and then picks him up bridal-style and jumps out of the window across the alley below onto the opposite roof. No Peixes family meeting is complete without Felicias hair being stepped on at least three times (it trails on the floor). Alternia!Sollux is kinda permanent guest at the Strilonde residence, he has snark-offs with Beta!Rose and game marathons with Alpha!Roxy. Alternia!Vriska and Alternia!Terezi have been given into the care of Snowman, Alternia!Vriska because Mindfang wanted Vriska to have a normal life, while Alternia!Terezi is wherever Alternia!Vriska is. Alternia!Vriska and Alternia!Terezi film elaborate dramas. Alternia!Tavros supplies the fans for dramatic wind, Alternia!Sollux does the cuts, and has a stash of bloopers. Everyone else regularily gets roped into their LARP episodes which span the whole town.
you forgot the part where Karkat and John being an item turns into a gigantic inheritance drama and a parody rendition of Let It Go as sung by Feferi Peixes, breaking off their engagement. Who then immediately hooks up with local hot archeologist Aradia Megido, who MAY OR MAY NOT SMUGGLE VALUABLE STUFF OFF SITE AND ONTO THE BLACKMARKET And Sprite is absolutely definitly from the mirror verse, not from a bar.
Contessa has a fucking fit when she hears about it. Geez what have you been smoking, of course Sprite came from a Buy 1 get 1 free deal. (running gag from when we were planning to make this into a tumblr askblog: whenever the question 'where did sprite come from' comes up, the answer is a different one) other aus between ives and me: -dgm au in which a) alma survives, and b) there are actual masses, held by the exorcists. allens and cross' masses are a weird mix of all denominations and some decidedly not christian religions, and truly a thing to behold. -gravity falls just-before-college au written around marina and the diamonds songs. (The Pines twins return to Gravity Falls for one last summer before heading off to college. This is not a happy story.) -gravity falls college au in which mabel, dipper, pacifica are roomies. they practice witchcraft and are haunted by a very nice ghost who originated in the previous au. (aka in which everyone is ok and nothing hurts) -naruto punk/goth/vampires/high school au -one piece roadtrip au, in which luffy and party detour all across amurrica because everyone has to meet up with somebody. law gets roped into it. they find sabo doing campaign work for dragon. ace, luffy, and sabo have a heartfelt reunion. (ace and sabo doubleteam law and give him the "if you hurt our little brother youre gonna regret it" talk. shortly after that, hancock gives law the same talk, law is like "sorry but those two were kinda more threatening than you", hancock goes "bitch please i can mop the floor with those two onehanded" and proceeds to do so.). garp is very annoyed that both of his grandkids ended up doing that up to no good eternal road trip business (we are in anime land, and therefore eternal summer break and therefore eternal road trip) im pretty sure i forgot a few.
Owari no Seraph is a manga/anime/light novel series that is. Glorious. It's about apocalypses and vampires and there is a lot of pretty characters and awesome friendships and emotions and is2g if MikaYuu isn't gonna be endgame I'll eat a hat. The anime seems to have a higher production budget than Attack on Titan and it shows. The fighting sequences are just so gorgeous holy shit. It presents as light hearted action-y with romantic undertones and ship-baiting (seems they wanted the fujoshi target group) but quickly devolves into part time political drama part time supernatural action with emotions running high. Very expressive and likeable characters, tons of tragic backstory for everyone, 10/10 would recommend to anyone who likes stuff in the style of D.Gray-man.
