[lurk] To answer my own question, I like: World of Darkness AUs, crossover AUs (characters of A in the universe of B), roleswap AUs, small-change-wrecks-canon AUs... Mostly things that build character insights through the alternate events, and full-setting-changes that aren't modern slice of life, basically.
okay, so. I reread my mostly abandoned due to depression/lost interest RWBY WIP, and i figured out that the way i wrote it could very easily lend itself to a ship between a human and a massive fuck off mech, so. That's greatly rekindled my interest. I figure Penny would be a military mech with a bug in her programming, the kinda deal that prevents her from fufilling her purpose but gives her a certain level of personality less inscrutable than most of her class. And doubtless the handlers of AIs have gotta hold some sorta empathy for the damn things, so. I figure it's relatively common for them to try and steal AIs with game-breaking glitches rather than let their personalities be erased, yeh? So, maybe Penny's handler gets a case of the maternal/paternal willies and goes on the run with their giant robot daughter, and ends up entangled with all the illegal crap RWBY and co got going down, blah blah blah, Techhead meets Robot, lovey dovy good times + AI what measure is a nonhuman drama + crime drama. Thoughts: Penny has no means of synthesizing speech. She can make certain noises and flash lights in morse code and can send text messages on certain frequencies, but she can't talk unless Ruby builds her a thing and hooks her up to it. In fact, she can't do a lot of things unless Ruby goes in and fucks with her programming and her body, and there's a certain level of "I'm falling for this girl who isn't a girl but wants to be a girl and i have a hand in making her what she is isn;t that a way fucked power imbalance" panic going on, definitely. And the rest of what I've got is just wavy hands and chirping.
Since my special-interest fandom is tiny and has very limited new people and content (since it's for an obscure game on an outdated mobile console), I've kind of been falling down the ridiculous AU hole just so I have more things to talk and think about. Most recently this has been Star Wars AU, which I suddenly became very invested in when I realized my favorite character's life would be even worse in this silly AU than in canon, MUAHAHAHA. >888)))
Miraculous Ladybug RWBY AU. Adrien as a half faunus, sheltered and isolated since childhood due to Gabriel's perhaps justified paranoia over faunus hate by humans and attacks by faunus terrorists in acounta Gabriel not being particularly nice to faunus in the past. Like the idea that his deal is weapons and armor for hunters and huntresses. Adrien can still model, and that's why the fencing lessons, so he can properly show off the goods without making a fool of himself in the eyes of trained warriors. Adrien with an itsy little stub of a tail. Or a scar where his tail should be. Cause it's risky business to be a faunus. Ears would be hard to hide, yeah? Maybe claws instead. Wields a rapier that extends, maybe? Like what The Will has in Saga. Semblance is Cataclysm, obv. Causes stuff to rot. Runs away to join Beacon, impresses the leadership (Plagg as a teacher, Fu as headmaster), and while he gets caught and taken back his father gives in and allows him to attend. Maybe so long as someone accompanies him? A hunter with a bodyguard, that'd be something, haha. Def partners with Marinette, who leads team. MANA. Or something. Marinette never wanted to be a Huntress, preferring to build/design/repair behind the scenes, but stuff happens and sometimes you gotta buck up and break Grimm skulls. Gets scouted by Tikki, who was in the neighborhood and saw a lot of potential in her. Maybe Tikki's apprentice sorta before Beacon? Or she just coaxed a young Marinette to go through the proper venues. I dunno, I'm too foggy headed to think this shit through all proper like. Nino with turntables for a weapon. Or a bubble wand. Alya can have her phone still. Be the mage of the team. Chloe and Sabrina are partners, Chloe leads her team, nobody is happy about it. Nathaniel is stuck with them, and nobody is happy about that either.

I really enjoy thinking about genderbent au Dresden Files stuff. (I have a mage the awakening character that started literally as "what if harry dresden and jessica jones were the same person") Only problem is there's a certain plot point that I feel like wouldn't be able to happen, because Spoiler lesbians cannot have each others babies accidentally.

I actually just did a version of this, working on sprites aradia - time tavros - light sollux - hope karkat - space (all neutrals, tiny hint of candy red that would infuriate him) nepeta - life kanaya - doom terezi - mind vriska - breath equius - void gamzee - rage eridan - heart (see below) feferi - blood (this one was weird, and i might go heart for her and blood for eri, not sure) rage is very close to gamzee actually, eridan is kinda pink when actually looking at it, i always think he's more purple than he really is
Yeah, I think I was remembering Rage as more violet than it really is. I like Karkat as Space, that's really smart!
hmmm okay blood is really messing with this heart and fuchsia/tyrian blood match up really well but blood looks like nothing else should I just make it eridans? (my original original brainstorming had just 2 hearts or 2 rages and left blood out, but that seems kinda cheaty)
Personally Witch of Heart and Prince of Blood sounds nore interesting to me! Blood does throw a monkey wrench in things.

Breath would be an interesting aspect for Vriska. I feel like it would be better for her as a person and for people around her; Breath is at least partly about persuasion and leadership via interpersonal connections, so there would be more emphasis for her on manipul8ion and less on "everything goes her way, all the time." A Thief of Breath could still cause quite a lot of trouble if she wanted to, but not as easily as a Thief of Light, I think.
