Today I saw what, after some light Internet searching, I am pretty sure was a mourning dove. But since I don't know anything about birds, the only thing I thought when I saw it was "Damn, that's a beautiful pigeon".

Doves and Pigeons are actually the same bird family, actually, with individual species' label as 'dove' or 'pigeon' being a largely arbitrary distinction, so by some definitions you weren't wrong!

In addition, white wedding doves are the same species as city pigeons: the domesticated pigeon!

Saw a hedgehog on my dawn walk today! I've seen evidence of them around so I knew they still existed in our area but this was the first time I'd seen one in person in years!

on the walk back from university i saw someone's pet cat! grey soft kitty that wanted to be petted (with a back-and-forth motion - the cat's owners informed me of how this cat liked to be petted so i could pet it better) and flopped so much when being petted that its human had to support it to stop it falling off the fence

    a very purry cat

the university kereru was hanging out by the library today!

(i say "university kereru" as in "a kereru that has decided it lives on university grounds", i think there might be more than one university kereru.)

The first of this years fawns have shown up in my garden. Which means time to cover everything in netting. There were also rabbits, squirrels, and a large and colorful assortment of birds after I put the feeders out. I even added a new bird to my life list (Bullock's oriole).
