i just remembered Tenchi Muyo existed and god nostalgia bomb i also realized in hindsight that Ryoko was my first big gay crush ever and tiny ryn, not knowing girls (at the time) could like other girls, or girls AND boys at the same time, was so fucking confused with how I felt about her. i should re-watch sometime, the non-cartoon network version, to get the full experience...
has anyone watched Jobless Reincarnation? I'm usually doubtful of isekai, but I just saw a review that made it seem actually pretty good.
Hope you don't mind a late reply from nowhere, and keep in mind I'm a huge fan of Isekai, but jobless reincarnation is pretty fun if gross inconsequential spying and groping isn't a trigger. It's not every episode but it's there and did happen to be a trigger for me. Otherwise it's just another goofy "I'm way too powerful and it's kinda fucking me over" Isekai. Main character was a jobless otaku watches porn all day and got hit by a truck in his old life and they went exceptionally hard on that persona but in a little kid. The magic system is fun though
Real reason I came here: picked up By the Grace of the Gods and I'm bawling every time this dude puts work over himself and his wellbeing. It's like he never isekai'd in the first place. I get that we're dealing with some deep trauma but for gods sake he's 11 now and thinks he doesn't deserve things like family, or kind words, or even a break when he's forced someone to let him do everything as if it's expected. I am in pain. Also before anyone asks yes it came before I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. It was the og Slime Isekai Anime
Oh, oh! You know what a super fun and unique Isekai anime is? So I'm a Spider, So What! The general morality is a bit twisted but it's fun af. There's themes of caste systems, reversed enemy roles and why, political manipulation, unusual protagonist (she's literally a spider monster and acts like it), whodunnits, and lots of close calls! It's not the most graceful of presentations but I've watched it several times over the course of it coming out and it's a really entertaining watch
I need to catch up on that one, but I remember that one being fun. Times of struggle, times of figuring out the tricks well enough to really make a niche, some upheaval that sets back to scrambling, a plan in mind...
Wait wait I didn't realize it was an anime now?? I just remembered the manga! How'd they do with adapting for animation, anyone familiar with both?
I've not read it, but it can feel a little rushed at times and skippy. I assumed the source material went over the alternate personas in more depth, they feel like they should but the anime definitely glosses over a lot unless they're being used as a gag Also irritating enough, the focus switches at random with seemingly no pattern on protag and other classmates.
The switches are somewhat abrupt in the manga, too - like they're supposed to be setting up expectations for future events, but the payoff isn't immediate enough to be clear why those timings were used. The parallel minds thing is somewhat abruptly introduced and mostly used for gags too, honestly, but it may be easier to make sense of in the manga? I'll have to watch and compare how much of their parts shows up.
The fight scenes are delightful, I will say. There's one in particular I watch semi frequently, like I'll just go straight to it sometimes Spoiler: Spoilers about midway through the series The fight in the dungeon with the ape monsters is really fun and suspenseful! I love it a lot, she doesn't really fight enemies in such a large number until then
Right now I'm loving Ousama Ranking. Fantasy anime that plays around with fairytale esque tropes. Like a much much lighter and more optimistic shounen GoT/ASOIAF in some ways.
Ousama ranking is delightful, enthusiastically seconded! I actually love queen hilling a lot, she's very snobby and antagonistic sometimes but she genuinely cares a lot about both her sons and I have no thought in my mind that she'd give up everything for both of them in a heartbeat Also!!! Realistic portrayal of a deaf main character!!! That smoothly integrates his deafness to be part of his person and not a tragedy! I mean the reading lips thing is exaggerated but the people who made it obviously either have life experience or researched the fuck out of things because there's actual sign language and bojji himself doesn't interact in ways a hearing person would to expressions of sound or signing outside of his current field of vision, which I've seen in the sparse collection of other deaf characters that be seen in media. They always slip up at least once. Anyways I love this anime, sorry for the teal deer
Yoshida Hiromi who has done key animation in Ranking of Kings is hard of hearing and is fluent in Japanese sign language. Also the Tokyo Federation of the Deaf oversees the usage of sign in the anime. Fukano Saki and Ito Shoki are credited as the consultants on sign.
Any other nerds watch and/or read Ascendance of a Bookworm? I watched the anime (bit low budget on the visuals but serviceable), got hooked, and turned to the LNs. Third season's coming out on the horizon. also Ranking of Kings is fire
Watched but never finished ascendance of a bookworm and I enjoyed it a lot! I love unique anime and that one definitely fit the bill. So much lore on everyday workings, too! You don't see that often, most anime is like "the dragon triad that cursed this world" and AoaB is like "this culture has you wear your hair a certain way depending on age"
I'm in an anime mood and would like some unique plot suggestions! Unusual execution of a normal plot works too, I just want something ive never seen before (feel free to suggest "that one really niche anime" that you have trouble reccing otherwise!) Only rule is probably no mech animes, I don't get along well with giant robots. Any genre is good, old is just as good as new, and an s rank suggestion would include Isekai but anything goes tbh Edit: I can't promise I'll Like every suggestion but I'll at least give it a go
