Almost thriugh 208 of tanis now. Yaaay. I think part of ky preference for it over the black tapes is that i find demoms and possession as dostinctly bad hard to take aeriously. Whatever tanis is though fots on much better with things i feel are possible so its scarier.

So I wrote up the first paragraph of what might become a fanfic and it is there that I realized that a big part of Within the Wires strength is Hester. She has a very distinct way of speaking. Her enunciation, rhythm, ways of wording herself, tone and so on are all very distinctly her. This can be said of some other characters in podcasts. Alex Reagan for example is very clearly not Nic nor is she Strand or Meerkatnip. We know that she is Alex because of how Alex speaks. Even if we were to divorce Alex's words from her voice in, say, a script we'd likely be able to pick out which words were Alex's just because we know her voice. But they're nowhere near as distinct as Hester, though. Which is, in part, due to the fact that she is the only voice we do hear. We get to know that voice terribly well.

But there's also the writing and the acting to consider. The pacing of Within the Wires is a thing I've been thinking about for a while because honestly it's masterful. The Black Tapes and Tanis both lagged at times annoyingly. To say nothing of the recent finales for their second seasons. Which just...they weren't bad but at the same time it doesn't say "SEASON FINALE" to me. More "Where the fuck is the next episode?" Archive 81 I feel moved far too fast with far too little reason for me to give a shit about Daniel. Within the Wires though was so neatly paced that I never really stopped and went "This is fakey stupid bullshit and I am annoyed at your writing". Part of the reason it works is because of what we learn about Hester and how what we learn about her is paced. We only have her word to rely on and she tells us to trust her. And at moments I did! Utterly and entirely! And at others I didn't. At some point near the end I was in such a desperate position that I would have trusted her solely because of that. Which made me wonder if I really could trust her or if this was just some sort of Stockholm syndrome she was building up for her own amusement. Things were very nicely paced with the revelation and exploration of Hester's character. And also you. As much as I hate plot pacing is of dire fucking importance with horror and the weird. Granted good pacing doesn't mean good plot. Kiernan is masterful at pacing I feel, but her plots are fucking shit. You will never read such well paced shit anywhere else though.

Away from pacing there's how her lines are written. Hester gives the impression of someone who is definitely real. This probably isn't how she speaks conversationally. These are relaxation tapes she is recording and she's likely running off a script in part. But everyone has their own distinct writing and speaking style. She's distinct in a way that makes me go "Yes that is a real person" like how Imp from The Drowning Girl does and how Dan from Archive 81 does not.

And then there's her actress. That was damn fucking fine work. Really damn fine work. Janina Matthewson deserves a fucking prize for that shit. Her voice is just lovely in general and she really just. DOES it.

And I only really noticed that bit because of how easily fanfic flows with her stupid voice. It's that distinctly real that I can remember it this well that it just comes out on paper. And not just paper. But even reworks how I fucking think.
