we joke that my brother is a third squared because my exdad was the second to have the name, though his dad was named something else? but my mom's dad was also the same name as my brother, so he's got it from both sides lol eta: also my mom's brother, but i don't think that factors into the numerals lol
Duncan is a pretty normal name, IMO? Not a super common one, but far from weird. (Unless your last name is Donuts, in which case it becomes cruel.)
Does it get the numeral if its not the entire same name? Like, my friend with the IV is literally firstname middlename lastnsme the fourth, or else i guess itd be like george hw bush and george bush--no need for a numeral to tell them apart Anyway
I'd say it counts! My family has a loooong line of people named John--but they all have different middle names (and many of them went by different names, often their middle names--my dad goes by Tony exclusively). I'd still count my late grandpa as John Lastname V, and my dad as John Lastname VI. (I would've been VII, and I guess I still kinda am because my given name is a feminine form of John? That probably doesn't count, but oh well.)
my family has a bunch of different lines of georges, so like my dad is george (middle name spelled with an e) (lastname) the third, and his cousin is george (middle name spelled with an a) (lastname) the third, and there are many more instances of basically the same thing with a letter swapped out because our family is large and full of terrible parents XD we used to get his cousin's mail A LOT
The only thing that makes numerals not count tradition-wise is skipping a generation or more, I think. (Discounting royalty, of course.) So if John's named after his grandpa, he's just John. If he's named after his dad who was named after HIS dad, then he's John Lastname the III. A lot of families don't start adding numerals until the third repetition, they go for - Senior and - Junior instead and people get I and II stuck on later.
I think you can do whatever you want :) The numerals are not a legal thing, they're a customary thing. That said, I ran into the name "Vegina" on an actual chart while doing chart reviews. (Can't tell you the whole name of course.) WHY
There is not a lot my brother could do to redeem himself but if he started to call himself Blah Blah Blah^3 I'd at least be amused.
To be fair, a lot of those names did exist before Homestuck. My middle name is on one of those lists :p
Good question---I see that name in WT often enough that I glossed over it, but she's somebody else's OC!
Maybe it's a name that's inexplicably popular amongst Homestucks or...something? I'm just as confused as you tbh.
