also reggie's advice— and my approach to this— is basically 'LOL MAKE SOME SHIT UP. WING IT. IGAF'. partially because less work for me, and partially because this is way more work— and more unpleasant work— for bel. i get the feeling he was the kind of kid who read alice in wonderland and got mad. but i think a weird america that works more like wonderland is a lot more fun from a writing standpoint? everyone gets to play by their own internal logic, even when it immediately contradicts the very last thing someone else definitively stated. like pretend games... you're arguing over what's true, but in a way that follows what the most compelling truth is, not the facts that line up with a static reality. so standing around going 'wait this is confusing and irrational' isn't going to get you as far as 'alright if you're the king of cards then i'm the king of dice and that has less numbers so i outrank you,' and seeing if it sticks.

i think erskin avoids weird population clusters about as much as he does mundane population clusters, so he's not like a master player or an expert or anything. but he has grown up with this. and i think he doesn't see things in terms of 'normal and abnormal' but like 'there's linear desert and dreamtime desert and mundane city and magical city and alive city and dead city and dream city and dream forest and mundane forest and rainforest and—'

 

Hooray! Well, you know, it'll line up then won't it? You'll be bad at it, Bel will be bad at it. So you get to pat yourself on the back for being such a superb method actor.

 

also i do hate to brag but i guess i say this as a warning, i've set up the situation to absolutely play to my strengths as a writer. i can dash off any amount of bullshit fairytale improv, and tended to dominate pretend games as a kid. i've always wished i could go to wonderland and really try it out.

 

i think there are werewolves out there who aren't fervent, creepy eugenicists. erskin is not one of them.

I love the idea of werewolves being baby-crazy yentas because it's such a funny contrast to ME BIG MACHO ALPHA ME DO VIOLENCE woof tropes. But i dont a c t u a l y wanna write kidfic. Them adopting a kitten or something in self-defense birth control could be pretty fun though!

 

.... What if they find a roadkill possum and raise possim babies. You cant tell me Bel wouldnt be delighted to trot around w baby possums on his back.

 

I could actually see erskin be happy to have a friend who only wanted to run and travel with him. Though hed get pretty nervous about a dog friend that was as uncalculatingly friendly to humans as a lot of dogs are. At least Bel is a little wary...

 

Erskin would be very happy to have another vote on the 'lets stay in the woods forever' platform. Also I could see Twitch having this issue.
