hmmmm! should we have a time skip somewhere?

 

I dunno! A night? The disruption would probably fade out gradually, and of course he'd want to be up and about and back to work as soon as he could possibly manage. Do you think it would be interesting or tedious if he stayed scrambled until Sigmah came and fixed him up?

 

I like the idea of Bel getting some time in as Acting Captain, actually! I think he and Lainey work pretty well together? Also I enjoy the idea of Bel getting like, saddled with the entire load Erskin's taken on, plus the week-and-a-half of zombie-and-bacon-ear backlog, and having to admit that at least a few aspects of how Erskin does things make sense. I think the Sunslammer is just the kind of too-big, too-understaffed kind of place for anyone to only do one job.

 

Oh, right, that makes sense! I'm not sure what I would want him to admit, then, either. I think I forgot that he'd already done that, hurr.

 

Also from what I remember you saying about him, he'd be pretty terrible at replacing Erskin in 'just do all the stuff Erskin was doing.' Wouldn't dashing all over the ship all day every day doing whatever random chore that needed doing— while managing everything else on his phone— drive him nuts?

 

haha yeah me neither, i'm running out of ideas. maybe pancho gets them settld down and goes to tell Bel he's acting captain? then we can sum up the next few days?

 

arguus is the cutest! i sketched erskin's experience of the timeskip, maybe you can sum up that bel's doing his best and sigmah and jethro have been KIDNAPPED dun dun dunn.

i'd imagine that whitey and itsy would want to fuss over erskin, though i don't know how much he would really be able to respond to that.

 

if i didn't get bel's actions right, pls say how he would be, and i'll edit it.

 

okay, i edited it to make it more about erskin's fussy temper and pride than about anything bel's failing to do. erskin is probably a really, really terrible patient to deal with— fidgety, aggressive, petty and contrary and bitter. he's gentle and friendly and protective and patient and kind to people when he's in a secure, superior position, but like, once he's incapacitated he's probably about as cuddly and well-meaning as a trapped badger. arguus probably does the majority of sitting-with since he's so hard to be mean to.

as for sigmah, uhh, maybe some surgical hybrid between uninstalling a helmsman and cutting cancerous tumors out of a highblood? a specifically tailored bacteriophage to target and eat the rogue buds? some kind of electro-psionic-shock treatment? maybe the way erskin's been fucked up by gly'bgolyb would forestall some of the more usual psychic ways they'd have to fix up his nervous system— he's not accessable/controllable through regular person-to-person psychic probes and controls, and he doesn't have the helmsman implants for them to run a diagnostic program to wipe-and-reload, like they might for a helmsman that was getting moved from one ship to another and needed a new neural map.

i would think that, after a long time of doing stuff that wasn't his chosen field or interest, sigmah would be really stoked to have such an interesting, fiddly, unique puzzle.
